HD192 vs 896 Mk3

Post by G. Arfaras »

I currently have an HD192, I was wondering if there's a noticeable difference in the sound quality of the 896Mk3? Mine is in the mail, I purchased it to do live performances and mobile recording.

Merry Christmas!

To my ears , the 192 still is the top MOTU unit.

The 896 is a nice package.

I've had my HD192 for several years now, when used with an Avalon a Rosetta and a nice mic, my outcomes are every bit as intimate and desirable as a lot of things I've heard done on Pro Tools HD. And I don't have to sweat the loss of an outdated $6,000 card in a few years.

As for the 896mk3, I'm going to be using it with a set of Grace Model 101's and an ISA 428 with an array of mics for my mobile/video unit. I'm sure I'll be satisfied with the 896 as well.

Thank you for your response and all the best to you!

Same here, In conjonction with my Bryston BMP2 mic preamp , the 192 is stellar.
Only one bad thing , I had to change the fan for a silent one when I bought it.
Don't know if the newer models have that problem anymore.....

I have a 828MKIII that I use "Live" as a digital board , mostly for inear mixes , and they are mavelosly well conceived machines.
The EQ & Leveler sound really natural. (real)
You should be happy for those job with yours.

The only negative is that you have enough processing CPU only if you stay in 44.1 for all the I/O. Don't know if that is also true for the 896.....

Thanks fokof, I believe the 828 & the 896 are very similar and have the same converters and preamps on them. Strangely enough, I purchased mine for many of the same reasons you have stated.

Now, let's go record some masterpieces!
