GS is probably the best audio engineering forum on the web though. Yes, there are a lot of people there who don't know much about much, but that is true everywhere. Still, there's a wealth of stuff there, you just have to did a little.mhschmieder wrote:I'm trying to ignore this poll so that I'm not tempted to register a membership at GS. I intend to keep that forum at a distance, by sticking to read-only mode. Due to how much DP gets bashed over there, I doubt I could maintain restraint if I was suddenly able to actually post there. I have neither the time nor the energy to get involved in discussions that are largely irrational. Thank goodness for this forum; one of the few sane meeting places on the net.

Basically that DP is and sounds like a toy. No self-respecting pro uses it.toodamnhip wrote:So what is the main beef against DP over there? What do they say in summary?
Can you believe that?

Good info in general over there... as long as you ID and ignore the trash... which often it is all there is.
You know, people talking like authorities on all subjects when they have no idea what they are talking about, flaming and witch-hunting famous or successful AEs and MEs, etc.
It's like a loud third world country plaza or mercado (flee market).

Absolutely Vote ! It can't hurt, takes little time and perhaps somebody might just think of starting to use DP .

I bet if you posted a PDF of the manual DP would rise to the top. Also, if it is mostly audio engineers then PT should probably 'win'. That reminds me, I need some TP for our bung holes...[edit]qwerty wrote:Absolutely Vote ! It can't hurt, takes little time and perhaps somebody might just think of starting to use DP .

The main beef seems to be that DP does not "sound" pro enough...that mixes done in Pro Tools are "wider", "deeper", "better stereo image", "[insert your favorite audio generalization here]" etc....toodamnhip wrote:So what is the main beef against DP over there? What do they say in summary?
I like Gearslutz, really, but you really have to have your BS filter on stun when you go there. There's an AWFUL lot of prejudicial talk over there w/regards to all kinds of gear and software, not just DP, but DP more than gets it's fair share of haters.

I find the site to be less than welcoming. It makes our worst suspected pirate post like an invitation to dinner. But I doubt they care about pirated software. They'd loose too many members. LOL. Won't be back there any time soon - except to vote in the poll again, and again, and again... NOT!

Yes, when DP6 came with all those changes and wasn't very stable, I left and tried Protools 8, i bought an HD5 rig and spent a small fortune on it, after 6 months of pain, i decided to went back to DP5.13, then Motu released DP7 and its constant updates, and I really liked it, then the mods by amplidood made my DP experience even better.Killahurts wrote:Yep, you frustrate those kids over there at GS all the time. You choose DP, and that burns those goofballs up.. if not PT, you ought to at least be using Logic like we're supposed to, like we tinker with in our cubicle in the office when the boss isn't looking and when we're not busy posting our confrontational bilge on Gearslutz.
I'm sure those DP bashers at GS are people who used DP in the past and are angry that DP is doing so well.
Don't take them seriously, they are angry people, I'm sorry for them.

delcosmos.

Really? You think so? I'm not as certain, but I don't (and won't) know those forum "members" (in every sense of the word). They sound more like they're in this brand loyalty mindset. They bought (or "acquired") a particular thing and damn it, it has to be "the best" because they are the ones using it.delcosmos wrote: I'm sure those DP bashers at GS are people who used DP in the past and are angry that DP is doing so well.
I was also tempted to jump ship with the release of DP 6 but hung in there. Had I bought into another system, I wouldn't blame MOTU for it [the new system] not working as well as DP, as you have not. And if I went back to DP and it worked, I wouldn't blame MOTU because I switched (again, as you have not).
I would blame MOTU for releasing a version that is not up to snuff and did for DP 6. I am also a bit underwhelmed by the fact that my PPC machine is not quite capable enough to run DP 7 as well as I like, but at least I have a few workarounds and I can do what I need to.
Perhaps the big pink elephant in the room is PT. It's become a standard and frankly, I don't understand that. I've always found it awkward from the days when it first came out. Maybe it's better now, but the fact that EM just picked it as Best of the Year DAW, in part because they have refined their MIDI capabilities is, well, kind of silly, IMO. DP has had those from the beginning. Even SVP was better than PT for many things (especially MIDI).
Now as far as beating a long dead horse, I'll add that in terms of things that should have lived but died, I still kind of miss my Atari ST and Edit Track. Maybe it was the simplicity, but it seems that was such an easy system to deal with. Clearly, I prefer the technology of DP and the new Macs, OS, and all the rest of what we have now. But I can't help but think that if Atari could have survive and/or Opcode could have survived as a Mac vendor, we would have a whole other thing to talk about today.
I still have a bunch of Atari Rainbow TOS chips around here and I'm saving them like Confederate dollars. And the chance of them being of any value is about the same.

I am a perfectionist and thus, i always beg him to give me pointers on my mixes..He has NEVER said anything...he loves my mixes.
All done on DP..Funny thing is, i don;t think we've ever discussed what system I record on...lol....
But there you have it. I never hear it isn't wide, deep or anything..As a matter of fact, I recall him telling me that my mixes take away one of his normal jobs, making a mix a bit wider...
So there are real world results.

Shooshie my brotha...
Anytime I get one of them huge replies from you, I know we're on a fun topic now.."now we're cookin with fire"..lol...
I love ya man!! You're a scholar and a gentleman...unless of course, someone leaves you alone in a room with a fully loaded PT system and a hammer..lol...
Listen bro, everything you said I agree with...however, my beef with MOTU remains and always has been, they make a great product and then shoot them selves in the foot.
They get too secretive about bugs and fixes...
They don;t promote well enough to the Pro World...
They don;t spend enough time setting up a crew of "computer based de-buggers" to allow MORE people to set their systems up PERFECTLY like your is.
I believe all you say in your post, and blame a lot of it on the very same company that made the great program we all love.
The program IS INDEED computer based...Don;t you think MOTU should really hammer hard HOW TO SET UP YOUR SYSTEM?
That OS based aspect makes the system all the more liable to the pitfalls of a less then perfect set up.
The techs at MOTU are indeed getting better and more savvy,
But in the past, if you mentioned a problem related to either 3rd party software or your computer, MOTU people would just point fingers AWAY from DP. Yet those working scenarios were REALITY and thus, MOTU should have been more agressive at de-bugging people's computer's. That's the price one pays for relying heavily on computers..
I think DP is the best..it is also discriminated against..But how about a HUGE campaign to put DP in all MAJOR studios in the world? An incentive program, with re[ps going out and banging on some doors?
This new reality would make our "lowly" DP mixes suddenly become compatible with all those "Pro" studios...
DP is the best, how about the company starts SCREAMING that out to the world a bit more?
Or shouting, whispering, whatever it takes..
Love ya
