help! can any one recomend a virtual drum program?

Post by aquaman »

I made the mistake of buying addictive drums only to find out that there aren;t any drum maps for DP and to convert them each project is a total pain so I am looking for a good virtual drum program with natural sounds that works seamlessly with DP. any help would be appreciated

thanks

I use Superior 2 and like it very much, but it doesn't have any drum maps specific to DP, which hasn't been a problem. I don't use Addictive Drums so I'm not sure I understand what you are requesting, but if you create one drum map in the Drum Editor you can save it as a Device Group. Once you create a Device Group it can be loaded from any other project, and you'll have all the mapping, as well as the names if you choose to enter them.

Again, I'm not sure I understand what you need so sorry if this isn't the correct answer.

There are couple of options, depending upon what module you use.

I have a TD-20 and I'm able to remap the notes being sent from the module to S2. I'm not sure which other modules are capable of doing this but I have a couple of crash cymbals remapped, as well as the snare. Before the updates, I didn't like the rim sound for some of the snares in S2, so I had the snare on my Vdrums kit playing the head sound for both rim and head.

Superior 2 has a "learn" feature, which allows you to select an instrument, clear the MIDI note that's currently set, and then by tapping the appropriate trigger on the Vdrums you can set the instrument in S2 to receive whatever MIDI note is being sent. I don't know if Addictive Drums has something similar or not.

Yes, remapping your controller is the key.

I second Superior Drummer, great program! FYI I work with the Roland guys all the time, they use EZ Drummer (the lighter version) all the time with their VDrum kits to show how they can also be used as controllers.
Thank you,

+1
use Superior2 and EZ drummer with TD20 and it works well.
I lay down the tracks w/ TD20 sounds and then I replace the sounds with the Toontrack sounds.
I prefer trigger inputs rather than triggering via MIDI for laying down tracks it is quicker, more reliable and much easier on my Mac.

I have been using iZotope's iDrum for about a year and it works well and slaves to DP very nicely. It is inexpensive compared to EZ Drummer and Superior 2 (less than half the price) and has a very low learning curve, pretty much plug and play. Having said that it has less than half the features too, but it is easy to work with and a simple, cheap alternative to the drum sampler in DP, which is still okay, just not for me all of the time.

You can try it for 10 days as a free download to see if you like it or not and there are drum sets you can purchase as add ons, also very inexpensive, but that sound good. Worth a look see anyhow at the iZotope website. :)

The latest version of Addictive Drums allows remapping of drum kits. It's a free download.

I own about every plugin you can imagine---I also favor Superior Drummer in how it sounds v/s its cost. Is it the best? Nope, I don't think so....but it is dang good and the price is right. In addition there are many expansion libraries available for it. You can't go wrong, although you just missed a HUGE sale on this though :(

I continue to feel that BFD produces the most organic tracks with the most fluidity of phrasing and believability of dynamic range and presence. But I cannot speak for whether it is the best "live" tool as I don't have an e-drum kit to trigger it with, so either use it on pre-recorded MIDI or in conjunction with Korg padKontrol.

There's a group buy for OWD/Drum Masters, which is now down to $99. I don't own any of their products, and I go back and forth on whether or not I like the sounds. I've finally decided that for $99 I'm going to take a chance, hoping they've included something worthwhile that I can use.

I'm a big fan of BFD2. The sounds are pure and raw; in other words, unprocessed. That is what I want from a drum VI. Whatever "sound" the drums have in the end should be my decision.
