East West demo

Post by towerproductions »

Here's a MIDI mock up of one my tunes, kind of chamber piece using mainly East West SO,VOP and Pianos libs and DP6 .
Any suggestions for better realism.

Oops, sorry for the multiple posts. I'm not quite sure what happened there, I thought I only sent it once. I guess I can't delete the others.

Nice piece. The mix and orchestration sounded fine to me. One thing that could help the realism is putting a bit more "shape" on the extended notes of the winds and the strings. Woodwinds in particular have a very hard time holding a note with a static dynamic level for very long, it's easier for strings but any held note will have some sort of tilt to it.

Most libraries (EWQLSO in particular) try to eliminate this as much as possible on sustained notes without obliterating the dynamics, it makes the patches flexible but you have to compensate for it when you're programming. Try recording some more drastic cc11 automation (if you draw it in manually make sure that you actually draw it, any curve that looks mechanical will probably sound like it). With EWQLSO's baked in ambience you have to make sure that when the note event ends any volume or dxf layer automation stops so you don't step on the release trails. Most of Eastwest's libraries tend to have fairly parabolic cc11 response so don't be shy with it, especially at the end of longer notes at lower dynamic levels.

Also, the velocity response of most of the patches in EWQLSO is pretty wide so be careful about having too many large jumps in velocity for notes that are close together. Keyboardists and percussionist can do that to some degree but it's almost impossible for the rest of the orchestra.

This is all pretty nitpicky stuff though, overall I thought it sounded good.

Nice track.
Its great how the flute line takes some unexpected turns. Melodically, I mean.
Speaking of the flute, that's the toughest element in the piece to "synth-y-strate" for realism. (As a wind player myself, I have been faced with this situation). This is a great example of how just one real player could ramp this cue up a notch. There is so much going on in the melody, that if you could get a real flute player to record that, it would be fantastic. I am sure if you are at Berklee you could ply a flutist with ____________ (insert beverage of choice here) and overdub the melody?
Anyhow, nice piece!
best,
Andrew

Thanks for the comments . Yes I agree using a real flute would definitely improve things. I have recorded this piece with live instruments before, piano, acc. guitar and cello.
I did this more as an exercise to see what I could get for realism with my EW samples and the articulations I have on hand.
