Buying DP update from non-MOTU vendor?

Post by FutureLegends »

Hey!

I have always bought my DP updates straight from MOTU.
Considering trying to get it from the local store this time (I'm in Sweden). What's the difference?

Does it come in a box? (I only have my original 2.7 box)
How does registration etc work? Can I install straight away or do I have to register with MOTU first or something?
Any other issues when buying from a distributor rather than directly from MOTU?

I guess my main reason for doing this would be to get the box and possibly get it on a 30-day invoice ;-)

Cheers

Mr FutureLegends,

I purchased my DP 7 upgrade from SwedenmidiMusic. No box. Installed without problem but to register I asked them to email MOTU that I got the upgrade. It was registered to my original serial the next day.

Interesting -- we can't do that in the U.S.; upgrades must be bought directly from MOTU.

Personally I wouldn't even bother with an outside-of-the USA 3rd party vendor. If you can deal with MOTU directly, it would be (IME) much better.
Why risking future head aches? I've had nothing but bad experiences dealing with these "music-stuff vendors".

I know Sweden is very different than Mexico (duh!), but still... I'd buy directly from MOTU if I were you.

So one can´t buy upgrades of DP from retailers like Sweetwater etc??
Here we can.. http://www.thomann.de/se/search_dir.htm ... +performer
but we´re in Europe.

Well, same here at DV247, really interesting cheaper upgrades...

I know that a difference of 100$ isn't a big deal when you're pro, but sounds really amazing when you're only "hobby home-studist"

I may contact motu before purchasing, just to be sure, but this doesn't really astonish me as I often see upgrades boxes availables for every software on the market in web music stores (ableton live, logic pro, cubase, waves plugs, native instruments...)

I would not understand why MOTU would forbid this...?

cheers

On top of that the postage to Europe would be well high. I plan to get my upgrade from a registered dealer in England. I'm assuming I'll get a hard copy manual when I do this. :?:

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I've gotten an upgrade from Sweetwater at some point. Actually, I think it was an upgrade from Performer to Digital Performer. Maybe that's the difference. I actually have two serial numbers for Digital Performer. I think I bought it twice somewhere back down the line.

Unless the poliocy has changed -- I didn't bother asking Sweetwater this yer, but did last year.

Postage might be the reason for an exception overseas. It might be more economical for MOTU to ship a bunch of boxes bulk, to select dealers who then sell direct to locals.
