new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
Just hooked up a new Mac Pro and some, not all of my projects will not show the waveform in any window. It only shows about the first half second as regular waveform but the rest is just gray space.
Also all outputs default to channels 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2 but only one works at a time. If I go to bundles, and I drag the L or the R icon to other channels say 1 and 2, there is no output. if L is on 1 and R is on 3 I get left output. If I move R to any other space, I get nothing. If I move L to 4 and then move R to anything except 2, I get no output at all.
I've re-installed DP6.2, disabled all plugins and can't figure out what the deal is.
Toast and Peak both work fine thru outputs 1 and 2.
What the heck?

If the wave forms are expanded to a huge size, they show up fine. No other glitches in the video portion on any screens. Only in the waveforms in the tracks and sequence windows

Re: new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
I just had the same weird thing happen in 6.01 on my MacBook Pro today with a project I created on my G5 in 6.02 - even down to the first half second of audio showing then everything else is grey. I thought it was caused by going back a version, but sounds like maybe not.
I'm assuming the waveform overviews have been corrupted somehow - I'm not sure how you force DP to recalculate waveforms. The reason why it's fine when you zoom right in is because once you've zoomed in a certain amount it stops using the overview and reads the waveform directly from the audio file.
I'm hoping this one will just go away.

Re: new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
I experienced the same thing bringing files from a Macbook Pro to a G5, both on DP 6.02.
Re: new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
I've had similar problems with opening older projects from an old G3 (4.n) into 4.61 (stable) on a G5. Soundbite appear partially normal at beginning, then appear gray in 2nd part. I wonder if re-importing the soundbites would force DP to recalc and redraw them properly. I'm thinking clone the audio files folder, renaming files to distinguish from "corrupted" ones, then import or drag into soundbites window, TO, or SE window. It's not a project I need right now so I haven't taken it to the operating room as of yet. Another prob is that only one channel plays, the "silent" channel is so faint that it is "mute" and not useable.

Re: new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
I don't think the files are corrupt. I unhooked the new MacPro and reconnected the old G5 and everything was as it always has been.
When I connect the new MacPro up to a single monitor in studio B, everything is find, but I'm only using one monitor there. I'm going to get out the backup monitor and hook it up and see if that has any effect. If it doesn't, then I guess I'll have to switch the firewire cards in the console that feeds the macs. That shouldn't make a difference, but as a last resort I'll try it.

Re: new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
Switching out the firewire cards on the board made no difference as I didn't think it would anyway. Switching the monitors didn't help either. I do have waveforms showing after I select the tracks and then merge soundbites. Even if it's already one piece, that works to get it up on the screen. I'm wondering if it has something to do with running firewire 400 drives and external gear into the firewire 800 ports on the MacPro. ???? Any ideas?

Re: new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
It doesn't sound like it's hardware-related. The fact that merging soundbites forced DP to redraw the waveforms leads me to think it has to do with how DP is interpreting or reading the soundbite information. Sorry I don't have a solution, but I wouldn't look at hardware as being the problem.

That is not the problem, I am using firewire 400 and 800 and the problem is still there (only with the files coming from another computer)Mountainfeverstudios wrote:Switching out the firewire cards on the board made no difference as I didn't think it would anyway. Re: new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
hey! I am having the exact same problem!!
When I open a project recorded with DP 6.02 in a G5 with Mac OS 10.4.11 in my MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.5.7 and DP 6.02 all the waveforms look like you say. all gray. when I zoom in they appear to be fine and if I merge, they look good...
any luck on making DP recalculate the waveforms? it seems like that would solve the problem?
one VERY INTERESTING thing...
all my files are AIFF format, except 2 sound designer files. and those look good!!! so the problem seems to be with the file format. I have noticed that trying to record anything other that SD2 on the G5 makes the program behave badly. Recording WAVE is imposible: crash on spacebar. aparently the multiformat thing works much better on intel? or maybe on leopard, i dont know wich one makes the difference... and i dont like it, I am having to switch back to DP5 on the G5 so it doesnt crash so much.
but sorry for getting of the subject... what about those gray waveforms!!!!

Re: new mac pro will not show waveforms and only mono output
Did anyone ever find a solution to this? I've just opened a project created on a G5 in DP 6.02 on my new Mac Pro using DP 6.02 and the wave froms are all screwedup, I really need to be able to edit these but I guess I'll have to to back to the G5.
I posted a technote to the MOTU site about this three days ago and no response at all. They were VERY quick to tell me I had to spend the $300 to upgrade to a new PCIe card from another tech note.
any help? Hello? Anyone?

I know there was a thread before about this very same topic. I did a quick search and couldn't find it. Perhaps if you do more searching, you may come across it.augusthour wrote:Did anyone ever find a solution to this? Yep I got thru this as well. I think forcing DP to re-analize the soudbites does the trick. You May have to merge the soundbites. Don't remember what I did.
