I have been jumping between using Logic Studio and Pro Tools 8 (currently with an Eleven rack) for a while but I am happy with neither. PT8 is flaky as heck on Snow Leopard and there are aspects to Logic which don't suit my workflow.
Anyway, considering DP (again!) and just wondered if anyone could let me know how the guitar effects in DP7 compare with the bundled ones in Logic and Eleven. Eleven rack sounds good but I think that they screwed up the implementation (defaults to recording wet and you need to record additional dry tracks which you have to reamp if you want to change the settings).
Also, how is the stability on Snow Leopard?
Finally, does DP still require separate MIDI and Instrument tracks for each soft synth plugin?
Thanks
David

Re: Couple of Questions re DP7
Don't know as I use Amplitube anyways. The new gate plugin is great on everything even though it's been advertised as a guitar plug. I just wish they didn't stick a guitar GUI over it. People also have been reporting positive report about the live room plugin but then again, I use Altiverb so I don't need it as welldmacintyre wrote:Anyway, considering DP (again!) and just wondered if anyone could let me know how the guitar effects in DP7 compare with the bundled ones in Logic and Eleven. On my side of the world, it's been VERY Stable. Best I may have ever had.dmacintyre wrote:Also, how is the stability on Snow Leopard?

Re: Couple of Questions re DP7
Regarding the separate MIDI and instrument tracks, many (maybe most) of us put our instruments in what DP calls "V-Racks." It's simple to do, and it's basically a one-step solution for given project. The V-Rack then acts just like an external MIDI rack, except that it's always configured for the current music. You select any instrument from the MIDI output list, just as you do with real MIDI gear in the rack. Audio channels work in two different ways: some have a single stereo pair output; others have many outputs, up to a hundred of them in some VI's. Sometimes it's a little tricky to find those in some plugin developers' graphic interfaces, but the major libraries always have multiple outputs.
Anyway, to get to the point: one MIDI VI in V-Rack serves all MIDI channels for that instrument in all Chunks in a given project. That means that one MIDI VI may serve 16, 32, 64, or even more MIDI tracks, and in most cases that means with independent audio outputs for each one. (not always, but usually ) That's a huge CPU saver.

Re: Couple of Questions re DP7
I've played with the guitar effects a bit, and I like the tones very much (I also have POD Farm and Guitar Rig 3 to compare against), and I think MOTU has some clippings of guitar effects plugin chains on their web site.
I use DP7.01 on Snow Leopard, very stable up to now.
For separate MIDI and instrument tracks, it's still this way, but I personally wouldn't want to have it any other (I also have Logic 8 and PT LE). I find it much easier to set up large multi-timbral orchestral setups this way, and the audio routing works great.
