DP5.13 &10.4.11 to DP7 & 10.6

Post by Anders Peev »

Dear Unicorns,

what are the odds in a succesful transfer from 5.13 to 7? Is it wise or crazy? I find 5.13 quite stable apart from the old "fades not working when merging soundbites every once in a while"- problem and some crashes here and there. I've upgradeed my 1st generation mac pro tower to 8 GB ram but still have the original processor.

But I am sooo curious about the convultion reverb and the new compressor introduced in DP6. But all the troubles about DP6 presented on the forum frightens me.

Will snow leopard and DP7 release the full potentional of my mac or will it throw me back to 1983?

Anyone done this trip out there?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Yours/

Anders

Well we have the same computer and I have 5g of ram in mine, running SL and DP7.1 and all I can say is WOW...

Lightning fast and after doing a massive 4 day mixing session not one crash.

The new features are just great, channel strip, real time fades and new fade styles, and some very nice plugins (and this is not all of them either) will save you time.

Coming from 5 to 7 will be like coming from a G3 to an intel, night and day.

Thanks Kassonica,

that sounds like a dream to me! I have had trouble working with just audio on my system. Last spring I recorded an album with my duo and I was terrified by the green-flashing processor meter all the time. But we finished and mixed in a pro tools studio. We where working with click and had an extermely low buffer size though. If a take would get longer than 3 minutes of recording DP 5.13 will consider to fall apart. Dispite all the troubles I've gone through switching DAW is not an issue for me, I've had my years with logic and now I'm teaching sound engineering on a music high school on PCs with Cubase SX3(!).

Is your computer really as old as mine? Mine was made and shipped from Ireland in may 2007. I'm a bit worried that my processor is too slow for SL. Will a 2.66 processor handle DP7 and snowleopard? Should I get an extra processor if I do the transfer?

Well the tracks I was mixing were about 30-40 tracks 10-15 Aux's 40+ plugins all recorded at 96/24 and DP7 didn't even hiccup, slow down or glitch.

DP7 is so optimised it's blowing my mind.

If you want, I'll send you a screen shot as I couldn't believe it myself.

Hi Kassonica!

Sorry for my slow reply, I had to go to bed to be fit for fight in the PC studio today! It's extremely tempting to jump on the train. Its a good time since I don't have any recording jobs right now. Many thanks for the advice Kassonica.

Hi there Anders.
I 've just updated to DP7 and it works great in 10.4.11. I've got a MBP 2.16 so, in principle, your Mac Pro 2.66 should be doing all right too. Why don't you update DP and then OS?
By the way, how are your Adams doing? I've read about them giving problems in Gearslutz ...

Hi Anders!

I´ve got the same computer as you with one less gig ram and I must say the transition to SL (from 10.4.11) + DP7 has been pure joy. Everyrhing works better. And I think the new guitar-plugs are excellent.

Thanks Albert!

My Adam A7s are briliant. They sound great but sometimes I feel they are a little too bright. At least compared to the genelecs I was going to buy in the first place. I've been using them a lot and they are very accurate and clear sounding in my opinion. One time I spotted a strange but quiet hum or buzz that lasted for a couple of hours but it never came back. It must have been some kind of disturbance from something else in the house.

Grymt Boraymond! Låter ju jättefint!

One last question: I won't enjoy the "having access to more than 4 GB RAM per software running" without Snow Leopard? Or can DP7 only use up to 4 GB RAM no matter what OS I have?
