Ultralite mk3 high pitched squeal then.... nothing
Hi,
I've searched this forum, and in fact the internet in general, and can't find an answer to my problem. I've just moved house so I have had a couple of months of only working using headphones from the Mac's built-in headphone output. I'm using Logic 8 and there have been no problems to report. Now I'm all set up, I'm using an Ultralite mk3 and have experienced a very annoying problem. Every so often (5 or 6 times a day at least) the Ultralite emits a high-pitched squeal and then goes silent. The only way to restore sound is to switch the Ultralite off, unplug it, plug it back in and switch it back on. A real workflow killer!
Does anyone have any experience of this, or anything like it? I'm on a MacBook with OS 10.4.11, using Logic 8. Ultralite mk3 is v1.0 - I don't think there's a newer version available.
Thanks,
Steve

Re: Ultralite mk3 high pitched squeal then.... nothing
Hello Steve,
I have the same issue with my Ultralite mk3 on a MacBook running MacOS 10.5.8 with the latest driver 1.4.23. I run GarageBand for my recording needs.
Sometimes it can take up to 30 minutes for the problem to arise then after that it is every minute or so. This is VERY annoying...
When the high pitch sound happens, I have this message on the Console log:
22/10/09 3:21:33 PM kernel ERROR: FireWire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5811 built-in: handleUnrecoverableErrorInt
So there is something wrong with the FireWire interface.
Let me know if you were able to solve the problem.
Cheers,
Pierre.

I wish Motu would issue a new firmware to solve this...
Or maybe I just need to upgrade to a MacBook Pro with a Firewire 800 interface instead of the 400 there is on the MacBook.
Pierre.

What makes you think that a firmware update can fix it?pjournel wrote:I wish Motu would issue a new firmware to solve this...

I've also got this issue with audio dropouts/high pitched squeel. Does anybody know what the problem is? Drivers? Hardware? Are there any workarounds?

This is a thread about an UltraLite mk3… Currently, there is no UltraLite mk3 firmware update available for download at motu.com.HCMarkus wrote:There was a firmware update for the 828mkIII.... contact MOTU

I've got a Techlink going at Motu.com. BUt so far it hasn't lead me to any remedies for this. My Ultralite •••• the bed today and started outputting all kinds of clicks and pops. Is this sort of thing covered under warranty?

Re: Ultralite mk3 high pitched squeal then.... nothing
Long time no update... Here's the latest. After a some back-and-forth questions with MOTU technical support, I still have the same issue. The only way I have managed to solve the problem is by putting my hard drive in my friend's Macbook, and using that! So it's a problem specific either to my Macbook, or at least specific to the combination of the Ultralite with my Macbook.
I have the latest drivers. I tried a fresh install of Snow Leopard, Logic and the drivers, with nothing else, to make sure that there were no conflicts between 3rd party plug-ins and the Ultralite. I really don't know what to try next!

Maybe there's something wrong with the FireWire port on your MacBook.

Re: Ultralite mk3 high pitched squeal then.... nothing
That's what I thought - so I took my MacBook into the Apple store and had it checked out. No Firewire problems apparently. Not sure if there could be anything else wrong.
Re: Ultralite mk3 high pitched squeal then.... nothing
has anyone found a solution to this yet? its killing my head

Re: Ultralite mk3 high pitched squeal then.... nothing
I have the exact same problem with a MOTU Ultralite. It will stop sending audio and the only way to make sound return is to change the Sample Rate. The same error appears under the Console each time it happens:
ERROR: FireWire (OHCI) Lucent ID 5811 built-in: handleUnrecoverableErrorInt and
Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead of last clip position..
I have tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM changing buffer settings, updating drivers, removing potentially conflicting plug-ins, but all leads to nothing. After about 30 or 40 minutes of continuous play the audio will inevitably drop.
The strange thing is that the problem only began about a month ago. Before that everything worked well under both Leopard and Snow Leopard. Even after I upgraded to Snow Leopard everything worked well, which makes me think that its not necessarily a driver problem. Could it be a heat problem? I found this thread while navigating which maybe could be pertinent: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... &tstart=90" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, I am about to lose my hair over this one!

Re: Ultralite mk3 high pitched squeal then.... nothing
I have the exact same problem. motu ultralite mk3 snowleopard 10.6.3. It was working perfect for a year, then this started...
it happens mostly on high cpu usage, such as flash video, or playing portal.
There seems to be enough people with this problem for motu to do something !
