I read on the MOTU support page, they changed the text to read,
"Free live phone support for the latest version of Digital Performer (Version 7)
Does this mean no more free phone support for 6 users?

I guess the upgrade is worth the support too.

Not really.

Seriously, that's just the feeling I get from it. MIDI drag and drop is fixed. Things seem smoother. Opening a plug-in GUI is a bit quicker and when DP transitions between pre-render and realtime it seems a little less clunky. That's the best I can do.

hey guys ... I've got two setups at my studio ... one PPC G5 and one QUAD CORE INTEL
I'm working on Tiger and DP5.13 on both systems ... I know its time to upgrade but my systems are SO stable right now I'm afraid to :)

Does DP 6 or 7 run on TIGER as well or just Leopard?

I've still got some VI's on my INTEL system that WONT work on DP cause KOMPAKT wouldnt play on INTEL. I need to get BOTH systems able to be identical and I wanna upgrade to DP6 or 7.

THOUGHTS?? I'd love any help you can offer

You guys... you have to excuse me for laughing about this... but really. That's sort of the problem isn't it? Maybe there are so many Logic videos because there are so many hobbyists "playing" in their bedroom studios with plenty of free time for this. I'm not trying to be elitist here, because there's nothing wrong with having a bedroom studio at all. My studio is in a bedroom of my house. Of course I didn't have loops to play with back then, but oh well.

But this makes me chuckle, because I can't tell you how many times someone PMs me and says "Hey... you should post a tutorial on XYZ." or "We should have a chart of configurations and blah, blah, blah." As an experiment sometimes I reply "Hey... that's a really good idea! Tell you what... why don't you tackle that and I'll post it up here and give you full credit for it?" "Umm... well, I'm really busy..." is invariably the answer. We're all for having other people do these sorts of altruistic efforts for the user community, but we ourselves think of our time as valuable and don't have time for it ourselves.

It's the same reason that when people give me a hard time about how this board is run I tell them if they don't like it, there's nothing stopping them from downloading the FREE phpBB software and starting their own DP board any time they want to. I know they won't. It's too much trouble.

I can understand you having a good chuckle at this. Just to be clear. This suggestion wasn't really directed at you or Shooshie. I think that Shooshie's videos are of great help, they are just not yet on youtube for all to find, and you sir, have thrown yourself on many a sword to keep this ship sailing for all of us... I was really just thinking out loud here.

I agree that a larger user-base invites more tinkerers and therefore more time for such examples to be created. What got me posting about this was Universal Audio... they post a youtube video for almost every plugin that they debut. The latest one even features a DP session.

Seems like someone at MOTU could find the time to make some promo videos if a comparable company like UA can.

Also, regarding MOTU, if a tree falls in the forrest...

Personally I have always said the weakness for DP in the DAW marketplace is the lack of guitar amp sims - to the point that DP does not get mentioned in most guitar mags as a possible DAW. With Record/Reason now out with the Line 6 sims, and new improved amp sims in Logic, DP was in danger of being marginalised - at least as far as guitarists new to recording. Now at least that has been addressed, albeit late. This point of mine has been dismissed by some on this forum - but everyone has to remember that if new guitarists gravitate to Record and Logic then all DP users will suffer as market share drops. I don't think anyone should be under the illusion that MOTU have addressed a real flaw in DP . At the very least some guitar mags may now consider DP - there has been no reason to before because there was little for guitarists until DP7.

Also if you haven't been trying out the guitar effects on your tracks you are missing out. LiveRoomG is one of the smoothest environments I have heard in a sim at all mic positions. I have been bussing snare drums and overheads to it for fattening. It is a great way to emulate the technique of playing tracks back through an amp in the live room while staying in the box.

I just don't quite understand how amp modeling and stomp box effects have to be included for it to be a "guitarist's DAW?" I mean how much of a market is this for starters? But besides that... don't guitarists own amplifiers, and if making too much noise in home studios is an issue, don't they own PODs or other hardware modelers? I'm one of those guitarists for whom DP has worked great, because I guess I looked at it as software for recording songs... not for supplanting a guitar amp or modeling. Certainly as guitarists our "tone" is somewhat established before choosing a DAW.

Before DAWs, back in the tape days let's say, did we choose a recording studio so we could you their in-house amplifier(s) (or amp modeling hardware if any)? Or did we choose a recording studio based on the quality of the end product it produced or that we liked the facility and the engineer and felt comfortable there? Should this not be the same today with a DAW?

I've used the analogy before, but I'll say again that choosing a DAW based on included guitar amp sims or pedals is like buying a car for the stereo system. I do hope that MOTU's participation in this possible fad of chasing guitarists yields meaningful returns for them. It's something of a "bandwagon" thing it seems. I guess with Digi's new hardware box, etc, the big push is on to eliminate amplifiers and microphones from the process of recording guitar. I remain skeptical.

Now that the latest update to DP7 is out, I am wondering if it is advisable to go ahead and upgrade now, or wait for a new computer.

Has anyone compared resource usage of DP7 vs. DP6? I wasn;t supposed to be able to run DP6 on my computer, but it actually performs better than DP5 did.

I suppose whether one upgrades on an existing computer or on a new computer purchase, the same steps have to be gone through anyway, in terms of contacting MOTU to disable the license on the older computer after the transition is completed (though not strictly necessary as one can keep two licensed installations for personal use).

That's news to me. I don't think you have to contact MOTU to enable or disable any licenses... not since I've been a DP user. As long as you have the install disc, I think you can authorize.

But then again, I've never tried installing on more than 2 computers.
