Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
I'm sure DP7 works fine. Myself, I can't justify the cost of upgrading as its not providing a single new feature that I need or really care that much about at all. Certainly not $200 worth of increased value for me. DP6 is working fine for me. Saving the money for something else.

If you got nothing more than just the increased speed of loading and saving projects, and the elimination of crossfade calculations, the efficiency would soon make the upgrade seem worth its while. But there's even more...dewdman42 wrote:I'm sure DP7 works fine. Guess I'm not enough of a power user to appreciate that difference to the tune of $200 to get it. If I was a full time working Pro I'm sure I would appreciate that more.
If you are trying to figure out Logic or DP, I whole heartedly recommend the switch by the way. DP in general rocks.

Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
Without a doubt... YES!!! I don't need the amp emulation either, although I got to tell you... the Boss Analog Chorus pedal effect is pretty darn cool on a lot of stuff.Tesionman wrote:Hey ya'll!
Probably alot of comments already about this, but.....
I have DP6.. although I've been using Logic lately.
Is it worth upgrading to DP 7??
Cheers my friends!
PS- I don't really need the amp and pedal emulation stuff..
But beyond that DP 7.01 just feels way more solid and I highly recommend it!!!

Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
You're sure, you have Logic, right? Well I'll take your word for it I guess. I don't doubt that's your experience, but I can't understand how Logic is "more direct in general." Nothing seems more simple to me than the layout of DP's Track Overview... very simple to me. Simply adding a VI was very confusing at first to me in Logic Express 8.02. To each their own.Tesionman wrote:Well... I have to disagree with you there! I find Logic to be very user friendly! I picked up Logic much faster than DP. I think Logic's workflow is quicker and more direct in general.
There also may be fewer DP tutorials online because fewer people need them. The large number of "how to" videos for Logic is somehow proof of ease of use or the opposite?

Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
More power to you. I think DP 7.01 is vastly superior in how well it works with VIs. Also, if you want to fix the MIDI drag and drop issue from certain VIs, it's your only option and that was a big one to me.dewdman42 wrote:I'm sure DP7 works fine. Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
I forgot about that one. Real time fades are pretty cool too! Channel Strip is a nice feature. Also, the channel strip that appears in the info area at the top of the Tracks Overview (and other windows) is very cool too. With only the Track Overview open, you can click a track, adjust the volume, insert an plug, open a plug to adjust. You do not have to go the the Mixing Board for every little thing anymore.zed wrote:If you got nothing more than just the increased speed of loading and saving projects, and the elimination of crossfade calculations, the efficiency would soon make the upgrade seem worth its while. Honestly, with that and also my AlphaTrack, I don't open the Mixing Board much if I can avoid it. I need to actually train my mind to remember that I don't have to go to the mixing board for certain common actions like inserting or opening a plug-in.

Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
I'm one of those grumpy long time DP users who skipped DP6 and jumped from 5.13 to 7. So far I am very impressed. I think the layout and work flow is even more streamlined. I'm not thrilled with the amp mods, but I like the real time Xfades and other enhancements a lot. Stability has always been a peeve of mine, and so far 7 is very stable. My impression is Motu is listening and making DP a priority again (here's hoping). I've been crying for stability, efficiency and the best audio engine possible, so far this upgrade feels like a step in that direction.

Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
Well, I would ask yourself a few questions:
Can you afford the upgrade cost?
Is music a hobby or a livelihood?
Will you make up that $200 through music projects?
Are you planning on updating to Snow Leopard? Then you have to go to DP7.
Me? I upgraded, but I was still on DP5.13. I'm in the mixing stage of a project now and will install the DP7 upgrade as soon as I'm through. The box is sitting here next to my desk on the equipment rack and I'm anxious to dive in...but timid enough to not want to risk any issues with this current project. So, I wait. And in a week or 2 I will upgrade.
I also just upgraded my Sibelius...but it's a business expense (read: tax deduction) and I rely on these tools for my livelihood.
I seriously considered Logic - even spent some time at a friend's studio playing with it. It's serviceable enough...but I do mostly audio and very little MIDI/VI and just found the editing features lacking in Logic. Maybe it was my inexperience, but I found it rather primitive. That being said, I wish DP would adopt a few of the editing features from Pro Tools (like tab to transient, the ability to head or tail align a region/soundbite on one track to a region/soundbite on another track and the PT consolidate track feature). But those are minor annoyances.
So, I guess what I'm saying is: to each his (or her) own.

Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
The vast majority of people using Dp7 have said that it's the finest release version ever. That is, the finest x.0 version in the history of DP. I'm reluctant to use the word "ever," since I can't remember every release version's behavior, but I'll say it's the best I can remember. Definitely worth it. On the other hand, there are always a few people's systems that contain some small anomaly that makes certain DAWs run badly. It may be some sort of corruption. It may be a driver for an audio or MIDI interface. It may be the iSight driver (really; some people had that problem back in the early days of the iSight camera). Or who knows what. So asking US if this is going to be worth it for YOU is a completely meaningless question. All you can ask is whether it's been good for us.
DP7 has been excellent for me; my favorite version ever. I hope you have similar luck.

This merely reflects the size of each app's user base.Tesionman wrote:Well... I have to disagree with you there! I find Logic to be very user friendly! I picked up Logic much faster than DP. I think Logic's workflow is quicker and more direct in general.kassonica wrote:

Although they say DP's summing is better as well as the audio engine. I really never tell the difference.
cheers
PS- Another thing is that unfortunately there are very few tutorials on the web for DP.. when you search Logic or PT on youtube there's tons of videos from so many users.. DP hardly has any. Never understood why.

Re: Is DP 7 worth it?
It would actually be a good move for either motu or the user base to create more youtube DP videos. There are a number of features that would turn some heads in DP that are absent from other DAWs.
That said, I know I'm busy and many DP users appear to be working pros so there is a smaller population of users with time for these things. Really motu or Magic Dave should do some... that would be very cool.

Dp7 is better then DP6!
6.02 is stable. Dp7.01 is the latest and some might choose to wait for 7.02update.
If you still haven't been convinced to upgrade,
7 is a luckier number.
What is truly amazing is Motu keeps dp has designed 7 to work on everything from a G4 PPC to the latest intel with snow leopard in a compact little install packed with loads of features. I couldn't believe the system requirements when i read them.
