The new iMacs do indeed look sweet. Except for the fact that they
don't have card slots (thereby eliminating running UAD, for one thing), I can't think of any compelling reason to get a MacPro instead of a new i-Mac.
I was about to spring for a new quad-core MacPro, by the time I figured in
extra drives and extra memory it came out to about $3700, versus the most
powerful new quad-core i-Mac for about $2400.

What's the usual shelf life of a computer these days? I mean, before you feel like you're further down the curve than you want to be?
Seems like I used to hang on to one for at least four years or so. I bought my 2.16 iMac just about three years ago, but those 27" iMacs look REALLY good. I at least fulfilled the requirement of sitting out one round of OS (Leopard), and Snow Leopard is also looking really good, included free in the 'upgrade'. My current iMac is really performing well with Tiger, but the lust is suddenly consuming.
Question(s). What is DP's current status as to taking full advantage of the quad-core? Would it be a significant upgrade over the 3.06 core duo, or for most practical purposes would the potential speed gain be moot? And would this new series of iMacs be '64 bit ready'?
It's all about buss speed and slots. It you don't need slot's for UAD etc you are good. You can't load up firewire devices on the same buss so it comes down to no Liquid Mix or similar outboard FX.
So the performance value of all internal software plugs and VIs becomes and issue. Personally doing without UAD, LM and the eSATA card is a deal breaker. Even the laptops have access to UAD...
Now it Apple is dumb enough to put a slot or two or add a seperate FW buss we would be in business with a iMac... until then spend the extra grand and get the real deal. imho

If Apple was to do things like that it would effect their workstation market. Apples about hardware and they are doing really well on the WS front... these new iMacs are designed a bit more for creatives like graphics, web design, photographers (SD card slot) but they do have the power to churn through a DP session easily. For now, the Mac Pros are the real workhorses and the iMacs are still for the creatives.
It's the storage issue. In the future I'm sure most plugs will be native so the DSP thing will go bye bye... but it's the data throughput that really handicaps these machines for any serious audio or video work. Now, if they came out with Light Peak in the iMacs then we may see more serious audio on these machines but as it stands now... I wouldn't go that route.

Thanks for all the good feedback. You have me rethinking the whole scenario again, leading to sitting on my current system for awhile yet (certainly the most economical option!). It's obvious that chaining my VI FW drive, my audio FW drive, and Duet (dumbing everything down to 400 anyway) off one FW port (at least my current iMac has two) would certainly not gain me anything speedwise.
I'm still curious whether DP (or Logic) could take full advantage of the quad core or even 8 core as opposed to the dual core.
It would be great if the iMac could offer a slot ala the MacBook Pro to add a eSATA card.
One more question: the latest MacPro offers five firewire ports, but I can't find any information on how many actual firewire busses it has. ????
I've been thinking about this alot too.. The imac v mac pro debate that is...
I think in my particular situation, with music basically being a hobby these days, that the i-mac is the best option.. Yes it's "only" around £600 ($1000) extra to get the mac pro but if I were to go that route, then there's all the peripherals that i'd want to get to go with it, to make it worthwhile.. Drives, screens, UAD's etc, etc, etc.
I'll be better off getting one of the mid-range imacs, which has everything i'll realistically need for the foreseeable future.. Whatever limitations i face i'll have to deal with... It'll certainly be a significant upgrade over what I have already.. What I already have, of course, I will still have.

Tim, I see that you have the 2.16 core 2 duo chip as well. I was so pleased with its performance in my iMac that I bought a Macbook with the same chip as well. And it still works so well with Tiger that I don't want to mess with it.
But I am itching to see how DP 7.1 works with Snow Leopard, and instead of paying $160 for the combo upgrade to SL I'd just as soon roll that money into the latest greatest iMac with the 27" screen. That screen may well be overwhelming for most things, but for DP and all the various plugs it's got to be great.
If only the Duet was FW800 compatible it would be interesting to see what the bus performance bump would be.
The last tower I bought was so freaking noisy it drove me nuts, so happy to go to the iMac in the iLamp G4 days, another classic machine.

Well my Macbook Pro actually has one of the Core Duo chips.. I missed out on the Core 2 Duo chips by a few months.. Still i've been very happy with it's performance too.. I stayed in Tiger for ages also but finally went to Leopard earlier this year.. Im in the SL crew now
It's the RAM limit more than the processor speed that i'm outgrowing.. My laptop has a 2gb RAM limit and i'm finding that is being stretched more and more...
If i get the 27inch dual core imac i'm eyeing, i'll be practically doubling my processor speed capabilities, certainly doubling my screen real estate, tripling my internal drive storage capacity and (once i add some new RAM) quadrupling my RAM limit... This all sounds very attractive to me!

Yeah i've been very happy with my duet though... I'll consider getting an Apogee One for mixing on the imac... Its USB so will free up the Firewire port for something else...

Which 27" are you getting- the 3.06 or quad-core? I'm still waiting for an answer as to whether DP can take advantage of all four cores......
Apogee One does sound interesting as well- that would free the 800 port for two 800 drives.
