MOTU 8Pre to PCI PC Card by Fiber Optic Possible?

Post by jmmo1981 »

Dear Friends,

I think teh firewire ports of my MOTU 8Pre are defective and not working properly therefore my PC is not seeing the interface and can just work in converter mode.

I live in el salvador (central america) so sending this box back to MOTU for repair will probably be expensive so i would like to know if you know a way to connect my 8Pre as recording interface using the Fiber Optic ports to a PCI/PCIe PC card instead of using the firewire terminals.

I will appreciate a lot your assistance since MOTU Tech Team are toooooo slow  .

Thanks in advance.

If you have ADAT I/O on your audio card, you can use your 8Pre as a front end. You will need to make sure you get the clock source set properly. Either slave your card to the 8Pre ADAT out or run a second Lightpipe back to the 8Pre and slave the 8Pre to your audio card clock.

Dear HCMarkus thanks so much for your reply.

I have been searching on the net and i was thinking about buying the EMU 1212m ADAT PCI Card that seems to have good comments and is cheap but i have a doubt; if i buy the ADAT card should i be able to use the Main Outputs and HeadPhone output from the MOTU as it was the interface or should i get the output signals for Reference Monitors and Headphones from the EMU ADAT card?

Thanks so much in advance.

Best regards,

Either way should work... but why not just get MOTU to fix the darn thing? (Although it could be your Firewire card isn't compatible... can you test the 8Pre on a friend's computer?)

The MOTU has CueMix built-in, and this hardware, near-zero latency mixer works great and will function in stand-alone mode, but is much easier to use if your computer is attached to the 8Pre with a Firewire cable.
