...too close to the mic sound

Post by midiw »

I made a one shot recording of a female singer while she had time and was only in town for one nite. And of course I failed to play back to confirm the sound etc

Well in my excitement I used poor mic and recording techniques which I should know better. But she was gorgeous with a voice from heaven.

Now, what mass plug could I use to mellow out the too close to the mic sound ?

By too close to the mic sound, I assume you mean proximity effect? There's nothing you can do to reverse the effect completely, but some EQ might help. A little low shelf cut perhaps. If popping is the problem, I've found meticulous editing of the individual pops is far better than trying to use a plug-in. Depending on the nature of the pop, you can select just the pop (zoom way in and make a careful selection) and apply appropriate filtering from the Audio>Audio Plug-ins menu. If it's just the "in your face" sound that you get from real close micing, sometimes carefully applied reverb can help give a sense of "room." Either way, shame on you. Keep your ears on the project and your eyes off the dame!

Masterworks EQ is great, because you can use the FFT to help identify problem areas. If you didn't overload something into distortion, you should be able to pretty well eliminate proximity effects with EQ. Haven't tried, but read about the new restoration tool http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/RX/ that might help with clips.

Thank you thank you for taking time out to respond and provide me with such valuable informative information. I really feel honoured to have such informative and experienced gentlemen give me this help.

I wish I knew the correct terminology to describe what I am hearing. Perhaps it is proximity although in the playback she stands out louder then all the other tracks. The recording was done on a Roland VS1680 hard disk recorder with all 16 tracks loaded.

Bringing down the volume sliders in playback helps but she still sounds slightly distorted. Anyway, I just can't release a copy because it would not be fair to her vocal talents ( aside from my sloppy recording ).

I was hoping that between the VS1680 and DP6 I could save the recording session.

You've provided me with hope and possibility I can fix this bad recording I made.

As Markus said, when it comes to clipping distortion, iZotope RX is an effective and straightforward tool.

About *sound character*, tossing slightly highs and high-mids, then add a pinch of short reverb should help much. Do allow experiment and you'll get there.
