Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
I just got DP7 and installed it on my iMac which is running 10.6.1. Whenever I try to boot up, I get this message "DP Has Encountered an Error/ MacOS error: Unexpected error (-8796)"
I've uninstalled, removed previous versions of DP and trashed preferences, to no avail. I also repaired Disk Permissions. Anyone know what this error means? I'm guessing DP can't read a file it needs at startup or something along those lines.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Mike

Re: Just got DP7: Can't Boot Up (OSX Error -8796)
I'm changing the title of your thread so that "Can't Boot Up" is "Can't Launch." "Boot Up" is a term generally reserved for starting a computer's operating system, not an app like DP and unchanged, your thread title would appear to be quite alarming.

Re: Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
Sounds like you might have a corrupted font cache (-8796 is a font error). Apple changed their font system in 10.6 and it seems to cause a slew of issues. Do you have Font Finagler? You can use that to flush the font caches in your system and that should clear it up.

The thread title is still pretty alarming. Not as bad as not booting, but no DP! yikes... And he's deleted all previous version to boot... I mean launch...
Anyway, in situations like this a call to MOTU is in order. I know, busy-busy-busy... but keep hitting that redial button. You probably won't get many answers here on that one.
Having just Googled the error, it appears to be related to MS Office. Do you have that installed?
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=OS ... f&oq=&aqi=
I didn't look for the solution but that link will tell you more than you want to know about the error. Also, search Apple Discussions for the code and you may fine a solution there.
Good luck.
ps- just saw the font error and that would make sense as well. Office (Word in particular) takes forever to setup its fonts at boot... I mean launch...

Re: Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
I had exactly the same problem. Below are the suggestions from Motu as to how to fix it:
1: From Motu:
Do you have more than one version of DP installed? Have you tried reinstalling 6.02 followed by the font update? You may have to flush your font cache. You can try quitting the process named fontd in the Activity Monitor and then restarting your computer or you can download a shareware app called Font Finagler (free for 40 uses) and use that to completely clean ALL font caches on the system. (end)
2: Hi Ed,
Reinstalling DP7 has been suggested (by someone at the office). The error message
is an OS message and not DP specific. There might be a preference or resource file missing
or corrupted. Also, boot DP holding the shift key and it will boot in MIDI only mode. This will tell us if the error points to the audio system.
*********************************************
None of the above worked. I ended up creating a completely new user account, and launching DP7 from there - everything is fine now, although it took me the best part of three days to port all my authorizations over to the new account.
Hope this helps,
Ed

Re: Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
Thanks all for your help.
Unfortunately I still cannot boot dp7. Motu suggested cleaning the font caches then restarting & relaunching, but that didn't change anything. I Still get the -8796 error message followed by a crash.
Motu also suggested creating a new admin user and launching dp, but then i got access denied 'insufficient privileges.' Alas, I *could* re-install to the new user, but this just seems ridiculous to me to have to create a new user for this software. I don't have this problem with any other software. What the heck is DP7 doing?
re: MIDI Life Crisis, I think you're onto something in regards to MS Office. I had a G5 that I bought in 2003 which came with a trial version of MS Office for OSX. This past spring I bought a new iMac and migrated the files from my G5 to the imac, because that seemed like the easy thing to do. I had long ago deleted the trial version of MS Office though. So..., am I now paying the price for having a trial version of MS Office installed on a previous machine 6 years ago? *c r a z y*
I've tried looking for a Remove Office tool that I can download, but I'm not successful yet.
Oh, if i hold down the shift key (which i need to do more of when typing the letter "i") while booting DP, it bypasses the -8796 error message, but it still crashes. Odd no?
Not sure what to do or who to choke at this point....sorry for that, it's late, i gotta go to sleep.
Thanks all for your assistance, I really appreciate your expertise!

Well since you're at your wits end, here's an idea... insert your OS install disk and restart holding the c key (or select restart by launching the install program for the OS). When you get the install screen, select ONLY the fonts and install them. Obviously, it needs to be the install disk for your current OS. If the problem is a corrupted font OS, that may fix it.

Re: Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
Thanks for your help MLC. It just so happens I installed Snow Leopard last weekend and then DP7 a couple days later.
I looked into reinstalling just the fonts as you mentioned from my SL disk, however it appears to me as though I can choose to install additional fonts, but there doesn't seem to be a way to 'reinstall' just the fonts. It seems to want to reinstall SL altogether.
I ended up installing the Additional Fonts from the SL disk, but that didn't change anything. I still get the -8796 error, then a crash when trying to start a New file.
Isn't it interesting that I don't get the error message when holding down the shift key when launching dp? I still get the crash when trying to start a new file then too. I also can't open an existing dp project. I'm feeling pretty hosed....

Re: Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
One thing I learned recently about DP is that A WHOLE PROJECT folder can be rendered unusable if some of the files get corrupted. I had a crash while saving a project which screwed up some of the audio files, and the project would simply not open. I had a subfolder with 100 backups of the project and none of them would open from the point where I starting adding certain audio tracks to the project.
It turned out that the audio folder had to be removed from the project... and not just another location on the hard drive. It had to go in the trash. Once that was done the projects would all open again (and I was able to fix the corrupted audio files and bring them back into a fresh audio folder).
I know that your issue is very different... BUT... maybe you have some corrupt files in the actual folder which houses your template or default DP project which is why you have trouble when creating a new project?
Try throwing a few things in the trash (one by one) and attempting to launch DP and see if it makes a difference. You don't have to empty the trash... just try storing any possible suspect files/folders there. You can drag them back to where they belong after each DP launch attempt.
This may not help you... but I am frustrated to learn of your plight and wanted to try suggesting something.

Can the Leopard disk be used to install the default system fonts? Or once you install SL the Leo disk is not an option? I don;t really know what the default Leo fonts are, but if I can find them, perhaps I can zip them and email them to you?mdripps1 wrote:Thanks for your help MLC. Re: Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
Did you by any chance have DP 6.02 on SL, and then try to install the font update for 6.02?
It did something weird to my system (it might have corrupted a system file), so I ended up reinstalling Snow Leopard (which fortunately is quite quick), and that took care of the problems for me.

Re: Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
6.0.1 ran fine on my machine when Leopard was installed. Then, in my excitement over SL and dp7, I installed both and started experiencing this crash. At one point, i decided to get rid of everything MOTU (don't know what I was thinking) and reinstall dp7 to see if that fixed it . It did not.
I have since been to every corner of my mac digging for fonts or files, either trashing them or renaming them and launching dp to no avail. I have trashed prefs a number of times. I can't open *any* project (for awhile I was just trying New files).

Re: Just got DP7: Can't Launch (OSX Error -8796)
oh, I forgot to add that I've tried running the DP 6.0.2 font update, but I get this error:
"an error prevented the update from completing
11500:2-14"
I figured it didn't like the fact that everything before DP7 no longer exists on my machine. Come to think of it, I feel the same way.
