How can I automate a MIDI plugin?

Post by Martin Ward »

I'd like to automate a parameter of a MIDI plugin (specifically, I'd like to alter the Onset parameter of the Humanize plugin to make an instrument's timing more accurate during a fast passage than when it is playing slowly).

I've tried to do it as outlined in the DP5 manual (p.731), using the Insert minimenu on the Event List window, however I find that the Humanize plugin does not appear on this menu. It's just not there.

The plugin's own window has the A (for Automation) menu, so I assume it can be automated somehow. But how?

(I had a quick look at some other MIDI plugins, and they don't turn up on the Insert menu either. Nor do any of them appear in the Add menu of the Automation Setup dialog.)

There's a clunky work-around: devote two tracks to the same instrument, with two different fixed humanize settings. But I'd really like to avoid that.

Can anyone give me some help here?

did anyone ever have an answer for this guy?
I'm trying to do the same thing...automate a MIDI plugin.
In my case, I'm trying to automate the "ByPass" off and on of the TimeShift plug as the track rolls. The Timeshift has Automate record/play indicators, but no "A" button.
Don't know if it's possible to automate a MIDI plug, does anyone know?
thanks,

I never thought of doing that...
I think the best bet would be to copy the data you want to process onto another track and then process that...

DP's MIDI plug-ins can't be automated. The automation menu shown in the Effects window is just a shortcut to the same automation menu shown elsewhere (Mixing Board, Tracks List, etc.) — it doesn't mean that the effect itself necessarily has any automatable parameters.

yea, there are a whole raft of creative possibilities *IF* we could automate those plug-ins

yea, that's the only solution, AFAIK too.

anyway, thanks for confirming
