Recording the band
Hi! I've got a Allen & Heath MixWizard 3 that has 16 pre-fader outs. I have a MacBook Pro with Digital Performer 5.13. I also have a MOTU Ultralite II (8 inputs).
So....what would you recommend that I can use as an audio interface (without breaking the bank) to capture the other 8 channels so that I can record the band live. I'd like to be able to record all 16 channels simultaneously.
Thanks!

Re: Recording the band
i have the same board and i am using 2 MOTU 2408s to get 16 real time tracks. i think the most hassle free would be to get another identical unit, to possibly avoid different latency issues; but i don't have much experience in clocking, so there might not be any issues to begin with.
i love my setup and haven't had any issues (knock on wood). you can pick up a 1st gen 2408 on ebay or craig's list for a steal, these days.

Unfortunately the 2408mk3s are out of the question because they require the PCI-424 card, which can't be installed in a laptop.dropd01 wrote:i have the same board and i am using 2 MOTU 2408s to get 16 real time tracks …
If you're using DP, you can easily add practically any other CoreAudio-compatible FireWire or USB audio interface because DP allows you to use multiple audio interfaces simultaneously. You could add any of the current MOTU FireWire interfaces – 828mk3 would probably be most appropriate because it has eight 1/4" line inputs on the back panel – or an interface from a different manufacturer.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Re: Recording the band
If you're gonna' buy an 828, a more ideal setup would actually be a single 828mkIII (which has 16 channels of ADAT Litepipe i/o) with one or two of the many 8 Input Litepipe modules available... Mackie, Presonus, MOTU 8Pre, etc., clocked to the 828 via wordclock. This way, all your inputs show up in one CueMix Console, and your computer sees only a single interface. Also, if you are mixing a live show while recording, you will want to feed your recording with either pre-fader signal from your board or use a mic splitter before the board.

Re: Recording the band
If you have an Ultralite, I'd just get another. Then you have all (16) channels of your MixWizard feeding to its own input.
Thank you,

The 8Pre gets my vote. I have mine lightpiped into my 828mkII. Works seamlessly.

Yeah, iWEB is ticking me off! I have several subsites, but it doesn't publish them nicely so I'm forced to re-arrange my website so that ALL links work ALL the time.Phil O wrote:Sorry for O.T.
