Different Drives/Different VIs???

Post by jroadrage »

I was wondering what the opinions were regarding different VI audio engines having to stream simultaneously from the same drive?

Right now I have Vienna Instruments, Kontakt 3.5 and PLAY all on my DAW spread out over 2 internals and 1 external firewire, it would be nice to sort of shuffle the way that the libraries are spread out to take maximum advantage of all of the available bandwidth.

For example, I'm waiting on LASS to get hear and I'm expecting this library to be a resource pig so it would be nice to spread it over the internal drives (at least) but then I would have to be able to stream different engines from the same drive simultaneously which I've heard can be problematic. There doesn't seem to be much of a consensus on the net regarding this, what have your experiences been?

Funny I was just thinking about this in the shower

I'm also waiting on LASS and use PLAY and Kontakt 3.5 with Kirk Hunter strings. I think the best way to try would be to try installing LASS on 2 drives and see if there's any difference from one just one drive (or different libraries on different drives?).

I have EW PLAY Sym orch with each orchestral section on it's own drive using an external SATA box. I know there's a lot of discussion somewhere on this board that I read in the past but the consensus seemed to be that the drives don't have to work so hard if things are spread over more of them. It's easier to grab say a unison string/flute line if the strings and the flute aren't on the same drive.

Having said that I have no idea if my system works much better than before I spread things out, I never did any stress tests.
