DP7 first impressions

Post by taylor12k »

figure this thread will be needed in the coming days/weeks. so, let's hear it.

for the 10 mins i've played around with my install of DP7:

- opened up a large 6.02 project. UAD plugs, various native plugs, etc. no hitches. everything seemed to work fine. but i didn't test every detail.

- the inline EQ dynamics i'm not sure i'll use. takes up precious vertical space in the mixer window and i prefer other plugs for those duties besides MOTU's.

- the "channel strip" window i think will be quite useful. basically, when you select a track in any window, it becomes the active channel in the strip. sometimes when i select a track it takes me a while to find that track amongst all the others in the mixer window to make a tweak, now it'll pop right into this new window by itself so i can go right to it. i have it docked on the far right of my left hand monitor in the consolidated window next to my sequence and track editors.

- realtime fades = great

- the project seemed to open faster in DP7.. where i got more spinning beach ball in 6 to get the file playable, 7 was much faster. good be this project or something else altogether.. but, dare i say 7 was ******** in this regard.

that's my first 5 or 10 minutes. most happy to know that my 6.02 session opened fine in 7. i may go forward with 7 starting today, after backing up the 6 files. although, 7 can save into 6 (and other previous) formats.

And imagine that it might even be faster once you upgrade to Snow Leopard. Exciting.

Wow! Great first review. And in Leopard, no less. If DP 6.02 was so much better in Snow Leopard, what will DP7 be like?

The UPS truck is in my area now. Shouldn't be too much longer, unless they take an early lunch.

Taylor is a smart guy with fantastic taste. I'm a fan.

He runs one of my favorite electronic/acoustic minimalist labels on the planet.

He's also a creative and interesting photographer.

He's too tasteful and modest to make mention of these things here, but... ummm, I'm not. :)

Anyway, I'm glad this thread started off with his post; it strikes the right tone. Balanced and absent of histrionics.

Thanks. My DP7/Snow Leopard transformation happens next week. Looking forward to it.

(thanks beautypill)

yeah, still waiting on Stillwell Vibe EQ to go to SN...

couple more impressions of DP7 here and first bug (?)

- first time i tried edge editing a soundbite, i did not get the little hairline vertical line up in the ruler following my edge edit. this worried me, as it was difficult to make precise edits without knowing exactly where on the ruler i was.

i quit and restarted and it seems to be fine. curious to see if anyone else experiences this one.

- opened a new project im working on. the client wanted me to make the bass track "churn and groan a little more". i put the new DIAMOND DRIVE fx pedal plug on the bass.. and bam.. there it was... churning and groaning. great! :)

- still confirming faster project opening times in 7 than 6.

My first question will be: Can I easily switch back to DP6 after I install 7?

Switching between 5 and 6 required swapping MAS engines and other shenanigans. I'm in the middle of a few big projects. It's never advisable to upgrade in such situations, but I might try it if I can retreat to 6 easily if need be.

i've had no problems switching between both. opening 6.. opening 7 to test stuff.. then back to 6.. hell i even had both open at once (but not two projects open).

I'm really hoping the problem of dragging MIDI files has been solved. Presently in Toontrack and Stylus RMX dragging the file from the app to the host causes a number of "ghost" files to to accompany it. It's been talked about in this forum and a work around discovered but it would be nice to get back to how it originally worked. That's been my only gripe with 6.02.

hello,
got it yesterday and fooled around with it last night. Clean install of Snow leopard, then dp 7. Installed play and it seems to be a lot better. Imported some of the MIDI files from Storm Drum 2 and loaded a few instances of play and could get the buffer down to 128 no problem. Then I turned on pre rendering and it actually worked. I Did notice some weird artifacts when I record enabled the track. It did not unload all samples and reload them everytime and and the performance meter hardley moved at all. Froze the tracks and all seemed well.I am on a mac 8 core 3.0.

Taylor12k, do you mind posting a screen shot of the inline eq dynamics section open in the mixer? I'm curious to see how much screen space it takes up.

Thanks in advance!

Did they add an inline phase switch to the channel strip? I didn't see any mention of that in the new features material so I doubt it, but one can hope.
