The 828 MkIII has ten analog ins, but only 2 are combo plugs, the 8 on the back are line in. The 8pre has 8 combo plugs and a volume knob for each of them. They hook up FW or lightpipe. My 828 and 8Pre are lightpiped together show up as the ADAT inputs on the 828 in CueMix.

When you say you have the two 896's chained, do you mean via ADAT?

And what do you mean by "pulling away from the main board"? Are you going to be using a console for all the inputs and then route those to the two 896's?

I'm a bit confused about what the specific challenge is that you face, if you have access to 16-20 channels currently. I'm guessing it is a protocol issue; that one of your connection protocols will become unavailable at this particular session? But which one(s)?

Im taking my desk top system,a pain yes,but its a favor for the fam so im gonn deal. My 896 and 896 hd are chained via fw. I only have 16 accesable channels to record to. Need best possible unit to cover at least another 16 chs that i can also chain via fw. Im gonna b feeding my motus audio from the consol the venue already has. Does that explain a bit better.
