Daisey chaining an 896 and 896HD
Ok here it is. Im running an 896 and an 896HD daisey chained via FW with Cubase studio 4.5.2. Im running the newest driver update MOTU has offered. The custom built computer that i have has above and beyond CPU RAm and hd space required with xp as an os.
My issue is... My motus randomly fall out of sync and one or the others clock-converter rate leds will flash, regardless of running either or as the internal clock. Now i have been told that the original 896 must be my main unit as told by motu support, so i have both units running off of the original 896 internal clock. This obviously messes with the rcording but most of all has had me pullin teeth. It will not stay clocked together.
Now iv read threads throughout and have considered the sp1 driver convert from 2 but the xp that is installed has sp3 encrypted already and with help from my computer guru, have tried to swap the drivers but to no avail. The sp3 automatically rewrites them back.
The firewire hub that im running currently is dominated by the motherboard so i know that the drivers are windows based, but i read that the sp3 has the bandwidth isue between 1 and 2 corrected. Is that not the case or what.
I have been lookin into a new firewire card that will run via pci e with stand alone drivers, but will this resolve my issue.

Ok so I began to dig in using your breakdown and im hittin a wall. when i attempt to delete the sys. files they automatically rewrite themselves. Is this normal or a new Bill Gates power trip. lol
Iv already deleted the ti ieee1394 from device manager but im not getting further then these system files. Is there a preseet somewhere that needs to be disabled in order to delete theses files?

I ran into this same problem as well and found the fix in two ways.
First, don't forget to shift+del. I tried three times before that one sunk home.
Second, I had to also move the driver.cab file to the temporary safe spot. I also had to move it back first since there were files in it needed by the MOTU driver to install.
Keep at it. This method is the only reason I can sync my 896hd and my 8pre

fellas. how r we? been out of commision for awhile but im back. I still am having issues with this sp problem. I can sit and hit shift del all day but the files still rewrite them selves. Without knowing that im using the files from the sp1 im at a loss. Now ive have recorded a band since and its hit or miss. I basically have to cross my fingers and hope for the best from take to take. but i have had a few glitches where it sounds like im in the f****** matrix and takes almost 15 to 20 sec. before it stops. Now im being a bit lazy today so i havnt really searched threw any new threads to c if there r new ideas or drivers or what out there but u guys seem to b the only two fellas responding so i figured id hit u up. lookin forward to hearin from ya....... laterrs.

again, Windows keeps back-ups of necessary files in various locations. If you delete it out of the system file it will automatically and magically return. You have to make sure all hidden directories are visible. Then do a search for the file and then you have to remove them from your system from those back up directories first.
If the point of all this is to roll back your firewire drivers to sp1, the easiest fix of all is to download and use the AVT drivers. They are third party firewire drivers. You can toggle back and forth between the Windows version and I find they work.

The AVT drivers are definitely worth a try as they have worked for many users.
But in any case, you need to pay special attention to this:
"[1.4.1] - Lastly, Locate the following files one by one and shift+del: "1394bus.sys", "arp1394.sys", "enum1394.sys", "nic1394.sys" and "ohci1394.sys" and shift+del
[1.4.2] - An effective way to do this is to perform a search of all hard drives for *1394*.* and be sure to select "search hidden files and folders," "Search system folders," and "search subfolders" under "more advanced options" and delete the mentioned files. It is important to perform this operation properly otherwise [1.5] will not "find new hardware" and will re-install the non-SP1 FW drivers. These files are hidden in many places on the system as a safety measure to prevent loss or accidental deletion of important system files."
Part of the steps in the link mentioned above in this thread.
