Hello everyone. I looked around this board to try and find a similar problem but I could not, so here goes.
I own an 828 MKII and I've recently been having an issue with it. I primarily use Ableton Live, Digital Performer and sometimes Bias Peak, and the Quicktime player to prievew audio files, on a 1.83 gigahertz MacBook with 2 gigs of Ram. Multiple times an hour, the 828 will simply and suddenly 'shut down' and not put any audio out, while in Live or DP (or Peak or Quicktime) the audio will still be playing and the transport bar moving and I can see the software gain meters running. This happens most frequently if I'm on a DSP intensive project, in which case the 828 will emit a quiet but high pitched tone until I unplug the firewire. However, the 828 will sometimes shut down if I just switch windows in a piece of audio software. I've done the factory reset numerous times but the problem returns quickly every time. I've also updated the MOTU audio drivers and Ableton, with no effect. Any ideas? This doesn't happen with my Macbooks stock audio...

Re: 828 MKII driver trickery and weirdness
Hey again everyone, so here is a little update: I borrowed the Edirol FA-101 from my work and a very similar thing happened to what I described above with the 828 and the Ultralight, though without the high pitched noise through the speakers... This makes me thing there is something wrong with the OS X firewire audio system itself, as I would assume the FA-101 doesn't go through the MOTU firewire drivers... Anyone have experiences like this?

I'm having the same thing happen with my setup. I checked to see if everything would play through the system outs & everything worked just fine. I did re-installs, reset preferences, repaired permissions, etc. & still nothing. The frustrating thing is that I only have that issue in Reason, Peak, & Quicktime. iTunes, Digital Performer, & Logic Pro are working like champs.
I'm currently running OS 10.4.11 on a MacBook Pro. Think it might be a security update that messed it up? Or the new Cue Mix update?

I've been having a similar problem for months. Macbook Pro 828mkII, OS 10.5.8 and Logic 9. This has been a problem since at least 10.5.6 though I'm not sure the OS version has anything to do with the problem. I called MOTU support diligently a while back and they couldn't determine the problem.
