896HD Firewire Issues with new Mac Pro 8-Core

Post by rlcramer »

I just purchased a brand new 8-core Mac Pro. I'm LOVING the thing, but ever since I got it, my 896HD doesn't seem to work. When I first got it, I had it connected with a firewire 400-800 cable, and the 896HD would boot when it was connected to the Mac Pro, but it would never show up in OS X. Then, after buying a new cable, and also buying a Firewire 400 PCIe card, now, the 896hd won't boot up when I have the firewire cable connected at all. Whenever the firewire cable is connected, the 896HD powers up, and the LED's on the front panel go through their dance routine forever. The minute I unplug the firewire cable the dancing lights stop, but when I reconnect it, the 896HD never shows up in OS X. I'm HOPING that the thing isn't busted, and maybe it's just a bad driver? I'm going to try to get it to come up in Windows via Bootcamp now, but if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I'm particularly concerned that the 896Hd is known not to work with the new Mac Pros, as I don't really have the money to replace it at the moment...

Thanks guys.

I found out that since some last audio update from MOTU my 896, and the 828 on the firewire play peekaboo in the audio MIDI device setup. I hear pops and clicks and the 896 is grayed out in the Audio MIDI config from apples.

I have had it up the the hilt. Now my USB devices do not show up in DP, but they show up in Cubase 5, Nuendo, Logic Pro.

I too bought a MAc PRo Nahalem with 32GB RAm, and 5 1.5 Terrabyte drives.
Do you get POPS and CLicks at random ? I can't get any help from MOTU, they are lout to lunch and should spend some of that MArketing money on updating their products.
I have talked to APple and they state it is a Bus/Driver issue with MOTU drivers.

To solve some of my problems i purchased a Sonnet USB PCIe card and plugged all my MIDI Expresses into that.
Now all the Timepieces work.
But I have no clue how to get the 896 to work. It is grayed out! But then Cuemix shows up and it shows up in PCI audio... go figure.
Also try pluging in your 896 into a second device like a external HD. See the issues is in the driver. Motu does not now how to get 800 out of a firewire. When you use a cable to down convert thigs are still funkey.
I resolved some of the problems with just pluging in a daisy chain to 896 and 828. Then I got them to boot and work.

1. Does the 896 show u in your Audio/MIDI config from apple?
2. Does the 896 boot up ok with no Firewire attached?
3. If you attach the firewire to only the 896 and not connected to other end does it boot?

Are you using a Alesis Master Control on the Firewire port?
Are you using any other Master DAW controller like Euphonix,or Tascam etc on the Firewire also?
IF you are unplug them then try it. When I plugged in my External DAW controllers they crash the 896 and the 828 because MOTU drivers are written by some guy who hits the pipe out back to much!! they get all crashed up because they are not handling collisions well with other devices.

Anywho let me know some answers to those Q's and I will help as you sure wont get it from MOTU... They are in the Stone age.
Think about it..who would invent a Video box and like a timepiece and use COMPONENT connections from the 80's instead of Mini Firewires and High speed data connections that all the cameras use today.

Kind Regards,
Barend
