DP 6 and Pro Tools 8 on same system

Post by rtcstudio »

I use Pro Tools 8 for recording, overdubbing and mixing.

I use DP6 (used to be Logic 8) for arranging, film scoring, MIDI sweetening.

When I first got DP6 it seemed like the two apps co-existed fine on the same system. Then I decided to try DP6 using a separate audio hardware device (ProFire 610) instead of using the Digidesign 192 Hardware via Digi Core Audio Manager.

But that was a pain, because the M-Audio firewire interfaces force you to shut down the entire system just to add a firewire drive. So I went back to the Digi Hardware until I could afford a MOTU Firewire interface, which does allow hot swapping.

WELL now, when I went back to Pro Tools after doing some DP6 stuff, I got a DAE error (-55) which necessitates nuking all the Pro Tools prefs, setup files etc. That fixed everything and I did my Pro Tools mixing session yesterday fine.

Now I go back to DP6, and I get "DP has experienced an error.....". After searching this forum, I found that I had to do a similar thing to fix it all, trash DP Prefs folder.

I did all that, and could still not get DP happy again. It reloaded everything, re scanned all the plugins, etc. I had to reset the Hardware Driver to the Digi HW, which caused a reloading of some plugins (samples). Then DP hung up again with the "DP has experienced an error.......".

Since it is now getting late, I decided to punt and get ready for my DVD audio mix that is coming in the morning (Pro Tools session). So I opened up Pro Tools and BOOM - I get the DAE Error -55 again.

So now I have to trash Pro Tools prefs and setup files again. Any ideas on why these two are not happy together now? I know it probably has to do with Digi Core Audio Manager, and some sort of files that the two are writing (or corrupting).

Thanks

The digi core manager is most likely the problem. Not sure what you can do other than
use script apps to dump one or the other as you switch back and forth. At least if you use
a script, it's one click and you are on your way. Also, if you don't have it already, get the
digi protools pref trash app that you can download from the DUC.

This may or may not help with your situation, but I have had a permissions repair fix things after ProTools 8 has "exploded" a couple times.

Seeing as you can't use the Digi interface if PT is running, why even bother trying to route audio thru the Digi interface at all?

I run both all the time, even at the same time. The trick is to NOT use the Digi Core Audio driver. It's never been any good. I run PT thru it's interface, and everything else thru the motu interface. Never an issue on any level. Once you have this set up, you can DELETE the Digi Core Audio driver. The you can run DP, QT, iTunes, etc., even while a PT session is playing. Zero problems.

Yeah the Digi core driver isn't very good. I never use it. You can also run stuff through the native audio, out the optical in the Mac. I run Bidule and RAX out the native while PT or DP using DAE is running on just about every session.
