I have the 24 track 5 feet from the computer. I'm open to opinions as to how close/far the tape machine should be as to not frig up the drive.

Build a Faraday cage. Then you'll never have to worry about it again.

I think 5 feet is probably a safe distance, but just to be sure make sure your backup is in another room. Yeah, don't forget to backup.
