ok, 828 MKII acting up for a year now & it finally just can't get to operational - weird glitches on screen LED's & freezes ...tried finding drivers to no avail?.I have ver 1.01 , seems way old....like many others , wondering if I should step up to MK3 or just bail out from Motu .....I feel slighted , they're customer support is far from good & friend has had 2 MKII's that have come directly from Motu w/ issues - thoughts?? thx in advance , they are $$$ so I want to make the right choice

Re: MOTU 828 MKII BOAT ANCHOR???
It would have to be a very small boat.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

MOU has been updating the drivers for years for the PCI cards. There are no firmware updates.
If you have the 324 card, the latest driver is 1.0.8
If you have the 424 card, the latest is 1.2.2. Both are available from MOTU.
You need to be a registered user of any MOTU product to have direct access to their downloads.
Your unit is at least 6 years old - there is the possibility that something is out of spec,
Before I would toss it, however, open it up and burnish all the internal connectors by removing and replacing them one at a time. I am amazed at how often this works. The tiniest bit of corrosion on any connector can render electronic gear useless.

Re: MOTU 828 MKII BOAT ANCHOR???
Two things I've experienced with the 828mkII are a sensitivity to low voltage and more recently, sensitivity to heat. If it locks up randomly or fails to power up properly - these could indicate bad power (something like your AC coming on can pull the power down pretty severely). Put it on a thru-battery UPS or voltage regulator to see if it behaves better. Sensitivity to heat on the other hand is when it powers up fine and then goes bad after a fairly regular amount of time, like 1 to 1.5 hours. I moved mine to the bottom of the rack with an empty space underneath and it works fine now. Then again, it could just be ready to go.

Re: MOTU 828 MKII BOAT ANCHOR???
my problem is - it freezes up on start up - right now it's stuck at the cuemix DSp screen - seems if I start it up about 80X !!! it magically comes on & I hard reset - it's ok for a day , then back to the freezing - I think it's a tiny boat anchor
((( so frustrating
thx!

thx!

Re: MOTU 828 MKII BOAT ANCHOR???
Mine just froze last night; I can't hear iTunes through it, and it prevents DP6 from loading. Factory resets do nothing, and my phone to MOTU support has been ringing for 30 minutes so far. I will likely leave MOTU for a replacement interface, based on what I've seen in forums and the difficulty accessing Customer Support.
The only recent changes are a move to DP6 from DP4 (a few weeks ago, during which time it has worked fine), a new monitor a few days ago. I'm running OSX.4.11.
Darn.

Re: MOTU 828 MKII problems
I found a fix, at least for now: I plugged the 828mk2 into a different firewire port on the computer (not a different port on the interface), and now it functions again. Amazing. Other firewire appliances (well, at least one, an iSight camera) works fine in the original offending port, so I don't know why this fix worked. It is not something that I've ever seen mentioned in any forum or in the tech advice from MOTU.
