Vocal Double Tracking With AutoTune 5 Problem

Post by buzzsmith »

Hi, everyone!

I have an older client who wants to try the vocal double tracking effect.

I personally don't agree on this particular project (kind of a patriotic anthem), but he is the client!

My plan was to duplicate on another track his original performance, slightly advance or delay the copy, then have AT5 slightly adjust the pitch either flat or sharp, whichever sounds best.

Seems like I remember this was a no brainer with AT4.

I don't want pitch correction just a global and slight pitch shift of the entire track.

I've looked through the pdf manual...

• Produce instant double tracking in one take! Record onto two tracks, processing only one of the tracks through Auto-Tune 5.

If you’re going for a tight double track, set Retune Speed rather fast and Detune Auto-Tune 5 slightly. Increase both of these
parameters to broaden the doubled effect.

You can also use some Vibrato to make a more dynamic effect (small depth andrate values are best, with medium delay).
Of course, you can also decide to record a single virgin track, and bounce that to another, processing through Auto-Tune 5.
This way you can dial in the effect whileauditioning the mix.

The issue is is that it only seems to work if I allow it to try and pitch correct according to the key center and the song modulates twice. If I try the Chromatic mode, I don't hear any pitch shift no matter how far I adjust the Detune knob.

I've tried bypassing all the notes, enabling, etc.

Am I over thinking this?...am I missing something obvious?

Could I maybe do it with DP's pitch correction instead?...globally, not note by note! (I just thought of this, so I haven't checked the DP 5 manual, yet...I'm using 5.11 but I have 5.13 available)

Thanks!

I do this with Auto Tune Evo ( I don't remember ever having an issue with AT 5) - never gave it any thought as it worked, the more out of tune they went the more the AT Evo copied track would chorus against it.

By chance is the singer so dam good that they are dead on and AT is doing nothing? If you plus /minus the fine pitch 100 semi do you hear that pitch shift amount?

I have run 2 instances of AT on the same track (Copy + original) with different attack speed settings so I would purposefully get chorussing but also correct the overall vocal tracks' pitch
