transfering Itunes library to a new drive : Solved
question for the mac mavens on the board :
I have been building up my Itunes library on a FW drive that also shares CHG samples.the drive is getting full.
I want to bring the Itunes to a new larger drive(esata)without the CHG samples.
Should I simply drag the Itunes folders over to the drives?
or should I clone( I have Superduper)my hesitation w/ cloning is I only want to transfer the Itunes(if I delete or move CHG samples off the drive, will the clone see the empty deleted space and keep the empty deleted space intact or will it copy and make the new drive a copy of Itunes only?
I hope this question makes sense I want to do this as simply and effectively as possible.
thanks
KG

Re: Question:transfering Itunes library to a new drive
You should be able to drag/copy your iTunes Music folder over to the new drive. Once it's done copying, go to iTunes preferences, and under "advanced" select the iTunes folder on the new drive.
Might be better ways to do it, but that's worked for me. It might take some time for iTunes to re-catalog the "new" library.

Re: transfering Itunes library to a new drive :PROBLEMS!!!
so I dragged the samples to the new drive..........no problem,
went to itunes preferences assigned drive in I tunes and Itunes keeps telling me it can not find original files.
tried many things including updating Itunes, erased drive and copied to the new drive again
itunes seems to only see older cd's i burnt last year, it sees nothing I did in the last month(all from cd's)they all played fine on the old drive.
if I open the new drive I see all of the music from the old drive but itunes does not seem to see it.
when I open itunes w/ option key and it gives me the option to build a library it always comes up "my name's library"
the file was always(to my knowledge)named generically" itune's library......."tried renaming it and it does no good
not finding playlist's, all song on list other than originals from last year seem invisible to itunes.
what an doing wrong here.
thanks

Re: transfering Itunes library to a new drive :PROBLEMS!!!
The folder you have selected (on mine, it's called iTunes Music) should also contain folders, one folder each for every artist in your library, and within those folders, a folder for each album/cd of that artist, and within those folders are the actual mp3's (or whatever other format) of the songs.
I haven't transferred recently, so maybe iTunes now makes it harder to do. Let us know how it goes.

I probably would have cloned the drive so all the files and folders make it over correctly.

Re: transfering Itunes library to a new drive :PROBLEMS!!!
The last time I moved my iTunes library, it was on a drive with many other items that I didn't want to transfer to the new drive.
Dragging the "iTunes Music" folder to the new drive worked just fine, although copying the iTunes Library file might have meant it didn't need to be re-catalogued. Does anyone know what the iTunes Library XML file is for?

Re: transfering Itunes library to a new drive :PROBLEMS!!!
hi MLC,
I might still clone the drive,my hesitation is it has a sample library also on the drive (CHG) that I do not want to clone.
drummer question for you
if I take the CHG library off the drive before I clone will the new drive put the Itunes in the middle of the drive and will I have an empty space on the drive or am I better off cloning the drive and removing the CHG samples after the clone.
the dilemma is I only want to clone part of the drive.
Thanks
KG
