I've kept a bookmark to watch the falling price of 8GB DDR3 RAM:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts. ... 0MB418LL/A
That is already $160 less than a few weeks ago.
If this keeps up, it may become affordable after all, to custom order a new iMac with 8 GB vs. the stock 4 GB.
DDR3 RAM is thankfully coming down in price quickly

Yeah, MHS. Great observation there.
Non-Apple RAM has always been cheaper, but Crucial RAM has generally topped the list in terms of price (as well as reliability).
The tide is turning....

Re: DDR3 RAM is thankfully coming down in price quickly
You probably have to punch in different numbers to find memory compatible with the new Mac Pro's, but in all likelihood those prices are coming down as well.
When the new Macs were first rolled out in April or so, the non-Apple memory was only a hair cheaper than the Apple memory. At $1000 extra, it was hard to justify the 8 GB vs. 4 GB choice (that's a lot for 4 GB extra).
