Fastlane USB driver for Tiger?
Hello,
We have been enjoying MOTU's Fastlane USB MIDI interface for years, and it has worked perfectly with Mac OSX Panther. We use MIDI with a Roland
KR-570 with Finale and Cakewalk Metro. (We also have installed Garage Band along with iLife 05 for the new Tiger installation),
You can guess what's next: We are "early adopters" of the new Mac Tiger OS, and installing Tiger has disabled MIDI on our system.
We visited the Apple site and also http://www.motu.com. We were very
encouraged to see that the latest driver for Fastlane USB is Tiger-compatible. We have downloaded and attempted to install the "MOTU
USB OSX Install" package many times.
Installation appears to proceed normally - Interestingly, the installer offers a decision to place the driver in Applications or on the system
drive. We assume that we should select the system drive.
Installation proceeds normally, and ends with a dialog box to restart. After restarting, we still do not have MIDI functionality.
Checking in "Audio MIDI Setup" shows a configuration that includes the Fastlane USB driver, but I believe this is left over from Panther. In the MIDI connection diagram, the Fastlane USB driver is dimmed out, and if we
double-click on this, the option to set "Device is online" is dimemd out and unavailable. "Test Setup" does not send data to the Roland KR-570 we
have connected and powered-up. "Rescan MIDI" does not detect the Fastlane USB. "Add Device" does not offer the Fastlane USB as an option.
We also experimented with building a MIDI configuration from scratch, and scanning for MIDI devices etc. but could not get Audio MIDI Setup to recognize the Fastlane device.
We then attempted to determine if the Fastlane driver had actually been installed. Looking from the root level of our system drive, we looked in "/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers" but this folder was empty. ( We noticed that a backup from Panther had driver files here. One was "MOTU MIDI Driver.plugin". As an experiment, we copied these driver plugins to "/Library/Audio/MIDI Drivers", but we saw the same symptoms as above after
restart.
We checked http://www.unicornation.com as well as forum and tech support listings at http://www.motu.com, but it's a bit early for postings to help us.
Here is a summary of our system configuration:
Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger initial release with May 1 2005 updates)
Machine Name: Power Mac G4
Machine Model: PowerMac3,5
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 933 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
Memory: 512 MB
Boot ROM Version: 4.3.3f2
_________________________________________________________________
Any recommendations very much appreciated! We are puzzled that the driver installation seemed to proceed quite normally, but the driver plugin does
not appear in the expected folder. Any chance that Tiger handles these differently and puts the driver elsewhere?
We are hoping to enjoy solid, reliable performance from the Fastlane USB interface with Tiger, just as we did with Panther. Also hope that solving
this will be of help to many other users who move to Tiger.
Thanks,
-john

Re: Fastlane USB driver for Tiger?
Hello
I would try to install the latest MIDI drivers one more time after deleting this file : system > library > extensions> MOTUMIDIDriver.kext. Once that file is deleted, disconnect you USB cable from the Computer and install the drivers again, restart and plug in the device on reboot. See if that makes a difference.
If not, you may want to try another USB cable ..

Re: Fastlane USB driver for Tiger?
This is info I copied from other posts. Maybe it will help.
The MIDI driver lives at: Library/Audio/MidiDrivers
and also at: System/Library/Extensions/MOTU MIDI DRIVER.kext!
When you deinstall or install a new driver deinstall the old driver before installing the new one. It is very usefull to disconnect the interfaces and make a restart.
I had the same problem. Motu tech worked through it with me.
1) Load driver
2) Shut off interface
3) Open audiomidi setup
4) Highlight interface and DELETE it. That will leave just your MIDI devices.
5) Turn on interface and a new interface icon should appear.
6) Reconnect your cables and you should be good to go!

Re: Fastlane USB driver for Tiger?
I've got a similar problem with OS 10.3.6 not recognizing my Fastlane USB. I partition my HDD with one full copy of OS9.2.2 and the other with 10.3.6. FreeMIDI has always worked without a hitch for me.
I downloaded the most current USB MIDI device driver from MOTU and installed it. I know it's there because it shows up in my OSX Applications folder where I dropped it (hope that was the right spot?)
Anyway, when I go into the audio/MIDI setup utility and scan for MIDI devices, nothing is found!
Will the above also work for me? Just de-install the app driver, unplug USB, reinstall driver, plug in USB...??
System Specs:
G4 MDD 1.25GHz
768MB RAM
2x 80GB HDD (one for OS's, one for Audio)
ATI Rage Pro 9000 AGP 64MB
ATI Rage Pro 7200 PCI 64MB
MOTU 2408 and 1224
MOTU Fastlane USB
Thanks folks!

Re: Fastlane USB driver for Tiger?
I just installed the latest drivers though I am not yet running Tiger. When I did this I lost the Fastlane in the AudioMidi setup.
Tried deleting the "Motu MIDI Driver.plugin" file, then unplugging the USB cable to the Fastlane from my G5, then restarting, then replugging the USB to the G5, but the Fastlane still won't show up. I also have an 828 mkII hooked up, which I would prefer not to use, but plugging in there doesn't seem to work either.
Anyone have the old driver they can send me or know where to find it? Any other advice? It just doesn't seem to find the Fastlane at all...
Also, probably doesn't matter, but the manufacturer(M-Audio) doesn't come up in the list of them on the AudioMidi device properties page (nor does Fastlane -- only Digital Timepiece, MIDI Mixer 7s and Video Mixer show up here). What>?

Re: Fastlane USB driver for Tiger?
Roughly the same. I have Tiger, fully updated, and the latest FastLane drivers from MOTU.
Using MidiMonitor , I can see events being sent to the Mackie Control Universal (Logic mode), and the wee little lights on the FastLane blink merrily.
However, events sent from the MCU light up the FastLane, but do not show up in MidiMonitor.
Needless to say, Logic 7.1 doesn't recognize inputs from the MCU.
I am assuming that the FastLane, being lower end, is not supported as heartily as, say, my 896, which is working swell.
Anyone have different luck?

Re: Fastlane USB driver for Tiger?
Update: depressingly/simply enough, this was my Belkin 7-port hub. I reordered my cabling, plugged the FL into the front port on my 2G5 mac, et voila - the damned thing works.
Sigh. the belkin was expensive....anyone have a better hub recommendation, esp with the FastLane?

I am having the same problem with using a Fastlane with my usb hub. I have a belkin 4-port external powered usb hub, but no MIDI input whatsoever shows up in the computer. MIDI out seems to be working just fine. I also tried my friend's iogear, same thing.
I thought it suppose to work with any standard usb hub. err..
any thoughts?
thank you.

Audio MIDI set-up doesn't see Fastlane
Hello,
I'm having a very similar problem with my Fastlane as "jbaxter". I have just installed the latest Mac Sec. Update and then updated my MOTU DP software from 5.11 to 5.12. I used my "Disk Utility" to repair permissions and then rebooted my computer.
When I opened an existing project to add a MIDI track, I noticed that my Alesis QS8.1 wasn't sending signal to the computer. I went to my "Sudio MIDI Setup" , and noticed that the "Fastlane" icon was gray. I also noticed that I now have a "Network" icon. In any case, I tried to re-scan and still, no Fastlane. I then deleted my Fastlane icon, the Alesis QS icon and Alesis SR-16 icon. I figured I would just try the "Auto Configure". When I clicked on "Start", nothing happens.
I then went to MOTU's site and noticed that there was a firmware update for Fastlane. I downloaded it and restarted the computer. I checked in Library/Audio/MidiDrivers and System/Library/Extensions/MOTU MIDI DRIVER.kext. It showed that the new update was in both places and it was the proper update.
Again, I went to my "Audio MIDI Setup" , reconnected my Fastlane via USB and tried to configure. Again....... nothing. It's as if the Fastlane isn't connected at all.
This is sooooooooooooo frustrating!!!
Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to get my MIDI stuff back online??
Thank you
and have a great day!!

Hello, I'm new to this site and fastlane doesnt work.
Hi,
I was just checking out this thread and noticed that no one answered the last three posts of this situation. I have the latest version of tiger and have g5 with the latest motu driver off their website. I talked to a tech on the phone and went through all his troubleshooting techniques but nothing. It wasnt the usb cable, not the usb port, and not the driver supposedly. Anyway his decision was that in a rare case it was the port on the fastlane itself. I had sent it back for another motu fastlane and still doesnt show up in audio MIDI setup. If anyone has fiqured out the problems with this any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Jmelvin8,
I wish I could give you a better answer but, I went through the exact same issue and, because I had a recording session coming up, I opted to buy a MOTU Micro Lite. Plugged it in, the software recognized it and, it works perfectly fine.
I never did get the Fastlane issue solved.
I truly hope you are able to get the issue resolved.
Best wishes!
