Ah, the story of my life when computers fail to cooperate!! :P

You know what? I really love this track. Another great mix by the C-meister. Bravo.

I must ask, though: where are you finding these voices? On the other side of the screaming, that melodic voice in the bridge is ideal.

I must also ask about the guitar and bass processing. Any recipes you want to share?

Thank you, kind F Hobbit. :)

Amazingly, metal has it's own unique and interesting production needs. You may not think so at first glance, that it's all the same loud sound, but many of these guys write some complicated tunes with different movements throughout. Reminds me of classical music. Plenty of opportunities for a producer to mix it up.

I must ask, though: where are you finding these voices? On the other side of the screaming, that melodic voice in the bridge is ideal.
You are referring to the section that has "melodic" singing, yes? It's actually the same person who is doing the rest of the screaming. He has a nice pop style voice and actually writes some good acoustic material from what I have heard. This track is from a band's 5 song EP that they are in the middle of doing with me here in beautiful High Ridge, MO. They go by Prig. http://www.myspace.com/prig1

I must also ask about the guitar and bass processing. Any recipes you want to share?
Sure, F. Maybe I'll make a short movie 'cause too much typing puts me in My Own Living Hell.

Oh, no need for a lot of detail. I'm just curious about the amps/mics used, if anything went direct, if you used any amp sims at all, and if so which ones.

There's that tune "Night" by the group Disturbed which I think is also brilliant-- similar approach, production-wise, to your tune here. It's a great sound. I also like the sound of Staind: "Change" is a great track.

Funny you should mention the episodical nature of this music--- it reminded me a little of Yes (another favorite). I love their earlier sound, but I also love the stuff Trevor Rabin did with them-- his tones just blew me away.

After listening to your track a few more times, I went back on the hunt for a better drum VI. I just have EZD now, but I see that Toontrack is releasing Metal Foundry SDX for Superior Drummer 2.x. in a could of weeks. I also took another look at BFD but am wondering about the cost of starting completely over. The upgrade to Superior 2 from EZD is about $250 plus whatever Metal Foundry costs. BFD 2 plus one expansion pack will set me back about $500, so it's almost a wash right there. Hmm. The only thing holding me back is that I've got quite a few of the Toontrack expansions already, but I need to see how far ahead or behind that puts me.

Addictive looks great, but I want a lot more kits. I know that I need to get away from EZD with this drag and drop issue. I'm also starting to feel hemmed in a little by it and am ready for something more serious.

This could be a summer of hobbit thrash!! :P

You know, that's a great title!!

I would love to tell the whole story of LOTR in metal. Hmm.

Thanks for kick-starting some new ideas, Phil.

Do Hobbits Thrash? I guess this one does!!! 8)

Hey, thanks for the music references, F the H. I'm always looking for reference material to archive for mixing purposes.

As far as drum VI's are concerned, I really have no beefs with SD2 and use it on most of my projects. Although I have not used BFD or anything else except what came with Komplete (Battery, K3 kits, etc.), so I may not be the best test case to compare the different drum VI's. I do know I am picky, though, and SD2 gives me plenty of options and versatility.

I slapped a couple of informal movies up of me going through the song and revealing what the mix involved, if anyone gives a hoot. I started with drums and guitars, and I'm going to put up vocals, special effects and the mastering here in a little bit. My movie making setup's always ready to go, so to quote Bill Murray (Caddyshack) "it's no big deal". Besides, it's a great way to get to know one another, don't you think?

Here's the links to the IDisk for all the movies.

Hey, thanks for posting those, Chris. I always like to see how other people work. I tend to stack things sometimes, too. I'll often find that a compressor needs one EQ before it, but a different EQ setting after it, and then who knows maybe a little more compression after that with different settings. I've even found the need for an expander and a compressor on the same track. Hey, whatever it takes to make it work...but it's always nice to have that track that needs nothing.

My downloads stop around 30 MB. I'll try again a little later.

Thanks for doing these, C. Can't wait to check them out.

Overall I know we all get to our end goal in some similar form or fashion with our projects, but it can be fun to check in how our little differences can lead to better and more efficient methods, eh?

IDisk speed can come and go. I mirrored the first two movies here:

Ay-yi-yi---technology.

I wasn't able to get more than 15% of the vid from the mirror, either. That's okay-- I might have gotten enough info, though.

URS-- interesting! Brilliantly interesting.

Similar to what I'd do--- although we hobbits tend to layer gobs of guitar-- different amps, different mics, different settings--- 8+ of one guitar track is not uncommon.

I'm still weighing Superior 2.x vs BFD2.x--- not that this has anything at all to do with the results you've gotten-- gracious, no.

I'm l'm playing around with titles such as "The Science of Psycho" or something to do with a hobbit @large at the moment...

I'm on a rage-- of the machine or otherwise...

Chris-- you are amazing.. and no mistake!!

Si, señor!

That sounds awesome!

This is not one of the styles I usually listen to, but I REALLY liked it. As a matter of fact, I downloaded you movies and watched them twice :)
I am really looking forward to listen to them in my studio with decent speakers, especially where you talk about the Guitars and bass (EQ).
Thank you for taking the time to share your work with us.

That's one of the things I've struggled forever to communicate to people verbally--- that quality still has merit, no matter what one's personal taste dictates.

Sometimes, they call that "dignity" and "integrity"!!
