First, let me establish my credentials - I'm a professional in-ear monitor mixer for an artist on RCA records, so I know digital mixing. I've been trying to use my 828MK3 as a live digital mixer for a cover band, and I'm about to blow my brains out.
1st problem - I cannot get audio out of the Main Outs unless it is assigned to Analog 1-2 (or 3-4 thru 7-8). Assigning it to Main Mix is dead air, even though the meters say signal is going there. I was under the impression (from the manual) that there are 5 sets of stereo mixes available - Main, An1-2, An3-4, An5-6 and An 7-8. If Mains are a derivative of one of the Analog mixes, then I understand (but that screws the pooch for me, as I need a main mix plus 4 stereo ear mixes.) But if so, why can you dial up a separate Mains mix in CueMix if it's related to an Analog one? Doesn't make sense.
2nd problem (and this violates a basic rule of audio) - I have a hand held mic plugged into Mic 1 jack, and even with the Trim pot turned to ZERO, I still get full volume. The trim will ADD some level if turned up, but it never gets anywhere near OFF. If this is a head amp gain pot, turning it to ZERO should KILL that mic signal EVERYWHERE. So this is baffling me.
Thanks for any suggestions with these issues.

Okay, I saw here in the forum that there were some issues with the old drivers, so I got the latest driver, and tried the Update program. I hold in Page and power up, but the updater says "no units in update stage". So, despite the fact that the unit generally works, the updater is not finding it.
Things get curiouser and curiouser.
This laptop is running WIndows XP Pro, btw. Forgot to mention that.

There is an issue with the new driver, 3.6.8.1400. where ASIO output routing is offset, in which Main Out is Analog Out 1-2. Analog Output 1-2 is Analog Output 3-4. etc.
I don't know if this issue affects all MK3 products, but I have it with my UltraLite-mk3. MOTU tech support says they're working to fix the issue.
The 3.6.8.1394 driver doesn't have the ASIO output offset problem. It can be downloaded from here: http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_ur ... =yfp-t-501
I believe the 828-mk3 have pad switches on the front panel. These switches are for reducing a hot signal coming into the Mic/Instrument inputs, if neccessary, by -18db and -36db (as the switches have 3 positions. down, middle, and up). That's how they work on my unit. You might want to use those pads.

Thanks HS. I believe the driver issue may be the problem, but now my problem is the non functional update. I wonder if anyone else here has had that problem as well, I didn't find it on a search of the forum's topics.
Thanks again.
EDIT: Problem resolved. Had to hook it to another system to do the update, and now the driver is working great. Funny that MOTU doesn't seem to have drivers listed on their downloads page..... very odd.
