Did you buy it used? Otherwise you should have one right? I don't think MOTU offers downloadable manuals. I'd call their customer service number and ask.

James is right. They only offer a print version for $20 in the MOTU store. No downloads, which is kind of a pain since I usually download a manual before I buy something; 'specially on the net

On their site MOTU they will send to you a copy of the manual for $20. I think this is one of the only SW and HW manufactures that do not have a .PDF file available to their users. To me it doesn't matter if you bought it new or used the company should stand by their products as others in the tech business do.

I started a company called Corel and we always supported our product mind you i haven't worked there in over 10 years as I have MS and am on disability

I think it would be a great idea that all the members using the products from MOTU start copying the downloading the to appropriate users. I, for one, am not keen at all on a company that you have either bought their product or using their interface are required to shell out $20 for a copy of their manual slash user guide. I believe that once you'vve bought the manual it is yours, therefore, you may make photocopies of the same manual.

I have started a few computer software companies and know that alot of my SW was copied an distributed over the net but that is the price in doing business. Any company that will charge a user for the documents is opening itself up for someone to make copies and distribute them freely. What is the basic reason for a person to copy something a give it away at no charge, I truly believe that the cost of SW is absurd. How many people here have bought the software that is released called SW Ver. 1.0 then 2 years later the same basic functioning SW now is SW Ver 4.0.9.2 (like what the H_LL is that ?

Unfortunately, I do not own a MOTU896mkIII but if I did I'd make a copy and freely get it to you. This is , BTW, the age or the internet and just about anything can be had for free, along with spam and virus's.

I think it would be a bad idea. I think it would be a violation of copyright to do this and if you even try to do any such thing I'll delete you from this board and block you faster you can blink. By the way, when you buy the MOTU product you get ONE manual FREE. If you buy one used from someone who no longer has the manual, how is that MOTU's fault?

I think MOTU should offer PDF downloads of their manuals. It's cheaper than paying for the printing of the manual, and what do you lose by allowing people to download the manual? I like the PDF manuals more because you can search them.

That's fine. You're entitled to your opinion. However, until MOTU decides to do such a thing, I can't condone posting links to manuals that have been scanned by users without MOTU's permission. That is copyright violation and this board can't be part of something like that. Thanks.

James I realize your the moderater here and thats an important Job in community building. (I would know I am a mental health worker and the NGO's I work for are very much into a holistic ideology) Ultimately you are out to protect the community from doing anything stupid. That being said, one of the first things I did when i bought my used 1296 was read the manual looking for the c with the circle. I dont know about thier other products but at least for the 1296 the manual is not copywritten. Other users of the 1296 please correct me if I am in oversight.
This leads me to believe that MOTU either made a glaring error or they dont care if we share info from manual to manual but they dont want it to eat up their bandwidth. It also goes a long ways to explaining why they only post one driver at a time on their website . I'm sure there are many other possible reasons but those are the two I think most likely. Curious has anybody seen the copyright logo in their own personal manuals for either the 1296 or any other MOTU interface? Kind of makes me respect Presonus even more, They'll not only do all the normal support stuff but they'll even give you mod advice How cool is that!?

Being as I'm not a lawyer, I can't tell if you if exclusion of the copyright symbol means "Please... go ahead and duplicate and distribute this document all you want." I'm not willing to stick my neck out to interpret it that way. Hence any posting of links to PDFs of MOTU printed manuals will not be allowed here. Thanks.

The missing coryright notice is probably an oversight. I know I have the UltraLite-mk3, and there is a copyright notice in the manual on page ii (i.e. roman numeral 2).

Yeah, I'm no lawyer either, but if there is a copyright in one manual then there is probably meant to be a copyright symbol on this one.As I presume MOTU does have a bunch of folk who are lawyers... well, I wont scan and post my manual. Oh and Hotshot?( If that is your real name.) Thanks for checking.

tgle:

The name given to me by my parents is Thomas. HotShot is just a nick I use.

Just wanted to post that I see a copyright notice in my manual because it may be useful to know that in this thread.

Actually the entire copyright notice is quoted below:

"Copyright Notice
Copyright 2008, 2007, 2006. 2005 by Mark of the Unicorn, Inc. All rights reserved.
No part of this publication may be reproduced, transmitted, transcribed, stored in a
retrieval system, or translated into any human or computer language, in any form or
by any means whatsoever, without express written permission of Mark of the
Unicorn, Inc., 1280 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02138, U.S.A."

Now, in defense of myself for posting this copyright notice as a quote, I bring the forum members attention to Section 106-107 of the United States Copyright Law (Title 17 U.S. Code), as
the purpose of this copyright quote by myself is for comment and nonprofit educational purposes as it falls under section 107, Limitations on exclusive rights: fair use:

"Sect. 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: fair use
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A [17 USCS Sects. 106, 106A], the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include--

(1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

(2) the nature of the copyrighted work;

(3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

(4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work."

Now, I'm sure we forum members come here to benefit from the knowledge shared by each other to make use of the MOTU products and benefit from music production related discussion. So I'm making this post so we all can have a safe (hassle free)and continuing beneficial experience here at the MOTUNATION forum.

Cya all around.

Thomas

It's all right guys. I didn't mean to swat a bee's nest when asking about the manual. I'd just assumed that almost every other manufacturer posts PDFs of their manuals that MOTU would too. I won't lie, I do have the original manual in storage but I just wanted something to read on down time at work. CueMix is giving me a headache figuring out some things. I think the copyright issues and lawyer jargon brought up in this thread might be making a "mountain out of a mole hill", after all the manual serves no real purpose without the hardware, but that's just my humble opinion. I guess that kind of answers my question and I wouldn't want to get anyone in crap for posting some sort of illegal link. Thank you all for your replies and best wishes.

Leon
