I must be doing something wrong

I'm running my guitar's preamp into the SP/DIF in on my 828mk3.
Mix1, every input except SP/DIF is muted, output assigned to Main Outs.
But the master volume doesn't control the Main Outs - huh?
I can control the volume with the Mix1's main slider but not with the Master Volume.

Any idea what's going on? Thanks in advance for any help.
