Should I leave my word clock turned on all the time?

Here's where to talk about preamps, cables, microphones, monitors, etc.

Should I leave my word clock turned on all the time?

Post by Tripi »

I just added a Big Ben word clock to my studio. Right now, it's plugged directly into my UPS, so it doesn't go off when I turn the main power switch off at night. I'm just wondering if it benefits my studio in any way to keep the word clock on all the time? Does it need time to "warm up"? I can't imagine that it uses too much power when left on, but maybe it would prolong the life of the Big Ben to turn it off at night with everything else. BTW - by turn off, I mean my hardware. I just put my computer to sleep at night.

Any thoughts?
12-Core Mac Pro, OS: Sierra w/ DP9 - always the latest version. Love of film music.

If all the gear that is synchronizing to the Big Ben is already off, then there's no benefit to leaving the Big Ben on. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to power on the Big Ben before the other gear, though, because synchronization problems (before slave devices are synchronized to the master device) can cause unpleasant noise. Since it's a solid state device, I doubt very much that the Big Ben needs to warm up. In the long run, it probably will prolong the life of any electronic device to turn it off when not in use since heat will damage the components over time.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.
