mic input is damaged. what can i do about it?

Post by ryanmcg »

Hello
I have an 828mkiiFW.
The left mic channel makes a crackling noise (can be heard through headphones) when nothing else is plugged in (so this is not an issue with my mic or cables or speakers or my computer setup).
Some times it will sound normal for a while, then comes a loud crackle, followed by a steady lower crackle that can be heard louder the more volume is coming through the mic, though it happens no matter how low I turn the gain down. Taking the cable out and putting it back in seems to make it go away for a little while, from a few minutes up to an hour.

Is this likely a loose connection that any knowledgeable electronics person could solder back in place? Or is this probably a more serious problem with that mic pre?
I have heard that Motu takes their time with repairs and I'd rather not have to do that.

Could be.

Can't really say from symptoms alone. If you know a knowledgeable electronics person it can't hurt to have them take a look at it. You could get lucky. Most likely, it's a trip back to MOTU.
