828 mk1 - headphone socket issue?

Hi - newbie here!

I have an 828 mk1 running on Windows XP using the latest firewire audio drivers from the MOTU site. When I plug in some headphones for monitoring, I would expect the connected nearfield monitors to be muted, but instead both the headphones and the monitors are sounding...

Is this a problem with my 828 or are my expectations wrong?
