Thoughts and Advice please? I think some might like this!

Post by BradLyons »

I've been working on what I call my "MOTU super site", the idea is simple...... It's no secret where I work and what I do, but I strive to provide my clients with service and support by helping them further understand the products. I wanted to create a site focused on MOTU equipment, to help further understand what they are looking at. I started this:

http://www.theaudioprofessional.com/MOTU/

The thought is to talk about the gear, but eventually I'm going to provide audio samples and further media information to help those looking into MOTU gear further understand it before making a purchase. The idea is to arm them with additional information online that speaks in real-world user terms, not technical per say. Any thoughts are welcome on how to make this more effective. At the same time, I want to send as many that view my site and these pages to here---Unicornation to help further grow this community. I speak to A LOT of people every day on MOTU gear, so I think it would be a win-win. It's a work in progress and by no means meant to be an "all-inclusive", just another resource to learn more of the basics.

Eventually I'd like to include a massive FAQ database of "how to" including instructional videos, that's where I might contact some of you and offer an incentive of some sort for your input.

Thanks again for your input!
Thank you,
Brad Lyons

Brad-- what's amazing to me is to see your 'transformation' or 'homecoming' (as the case may be) over the years.

You mentioned "what you do", but I've known you as a PC/ProTools officionado for years. Now, here you are dedicating time, energy, and *care* into a MOTU gear site (having bought a Mac and DP within the past year or so).

It's all very impressive-- and it's very generous of you.

I agree with this.

Tom,

Thanks, yeah----I thought about that after the fact and realized, why didn't I think of that before? I'm updating that--

Frodo,

Thanks! Well I've always liked MOTU and have used their gear. Obviously, the main intent is to help sell more gear :) HOWEVER, it's by providing support and information---not just selling it, ya know? BUT the more that understand it, the more that purchase it, the better it supports MOTU, hopefully drive more traffic here to those I talk to about MOTU gear----and in the end, all is well---in a perfect world 8) I am a Mac guy now, and I've been (and will continue to be) a ProTools guy, but I think that many think I am just a PT guy. but I'm not. I do deal with SO many systems and the fact is, I probably configure more MOTU systems than I do PT systems solely for the reason that some clients I deal with are Sonar, Cubase, Nuendo, Samplitude, Sequoia, DP, Logic, etc users....and well, MOTU makes a solution for every level, IMHO.

I think of some systems I've designed where the MOTU products fit perfect, for example...... I have a client with the following:

Tascam DM4800
(3) Apogee Rosetta800's
(1) MOTU 2408mk3

The MOTU is connected via TDIF to the DM4800, the Apogee's are connected via AES/EBU to the DM4800 and ADAT Optical to the 2408mk3. No other interface can do this. Or another client of mine I setup a live recording system that has (2) 24I/O's for 48-tracks live, but also an HD192 for overdubs back in the studio. In other words----their gear is SO diverse, for all levels and all budgets. About the only product they don't make is a firewire version of a 2408 8)
Thank you,

Okay, I added this to the bottom of the main page:

Whether you are new to MOTU products and searching for more information or you’re a current user and looking to connect with other MOTU users, be sure to visit the official user’s group and forums at MOTUNATION. There you will find real world users from hobbyists to working professionals, all ready to
assist and answer questions you might have---or listen for any input you may have as well.

That's nice, but I'd feel better if you dropped the word "official" from that sentence if you don't mind. I'm concerned it would give the impression that this site is run or supported by MOTU which it is not obviously. :) Thanks!

I started to write the "officially unofficial officially support forum", but then I confused myself and left what you see there :) Changing now, thanks!

Brad, it's nice to read your page. I've watched your transformation from PC/PT to Mac/PT and DP. I don't know if you remember our conversations years ago by phone when I predicted that you'd switch to Mac, and that you might even find yourself using DP one day. It wasn't in the spirit of "my team's better," but a genuine belief on my part that you'd eventually be swayed by the advantages of OSX. It's deep and amazing. Most people who use it aren't even aware of how deep and amazing it is, but they are aware of how easy and forgiving it is. Well, that's beside the point; my point is that I believed you'd be singing its virtues, given time.

You may recall also that initially there was resistance to having a dealer posting in the forum, but I saw it exactly the opposite: your being here worked to the advantage of everyone, not to mention that you're a good guy with a lot to contribute as a musician, engineer and friend. This thread is just one of many that has vindicated my view. So, I'm not writing to say "I told you so," but that I'm genuinely happy that you've become so enthusiastic about OSX and DP. I think you do a good service for a lot of people through these choices, and your broad knowledge of the industry helps you to explain things, draw comparisons, and provide useful information to your clients.

By the way, to everyone else; Brad is one of the most helpful dealers I've ever known. A while back I needed a mouthpiece for the Yamaha WX-5 MIDI Wind Controller, because my teeth had worn a hole in mine. I couldn't find a place to buy one online, so I asked Brad. He tracked them down for me. We're talking about something that sells for just a few bucks. Not a lot of profit in there for Brad, but he did the research, found them, and I ended up buying several to help make it a little more worth his while. But he'd have sold me even one without complaining. It involved several calls. Most dealers I've known in the past would not have gone to the effort to do that. Brad has a lot of energy and will do his best to take care of you.

Cheers,

Shooshie

Yeah... ditto on the "Brad is a good guy' sentiment. :) I had an issue over getting a product that I ordered through Sweetwater and Brad spent some time on the phone with me to help and it was NOT any sort of big margin item by a long shot!

I do take special glee in that we've helped in some way to convert Brad to the Mac. Now, maybe if we get a little help from MOTU by way of a rock solid DP 6.03, we can get him the rest of the way where he needs to go! Hehehe....
