896mk3 output levels

Hi,

I am new to the MOTU universe and very pleased with my new 896mk3 but I have a quick query (sorry if it's been covered but I couldn't find it).

Basically I have the main outputs connected to active monitors but these have no level control on them. I find that for the listening level to be right I need to turn the main volume on the 896 to about -60dB which means I have no level popping up on the main LEDs.

Now this may not be an issue (anyone?) but I was under the impression the volume knob would control the volume AFTER the LEDs meaning you could still see the output level on the readout without blowing your eardrums (or your speakers).

I was thinking of getting something like the TC Level Pilot (http://www.tcelectronic.com/levelpilot.asp) to go before the speakers so I could keep the 896 at 0dB. What does everyone think? Is there a function on the 896 to monitor after the LEDs or does it make no difference? I know it sounds stupid but I like having the meters moving when I'm playing back so I don't have to rely on the levels in Logic.

A monitor controller is always a good idea. I don't think the TC Level Pilot has markings on it so it'd be hard to remember particular volume settings. That said, there are a number of alternatives out there including the Samson C-Control (on the cheap side) and moving up to the Mackie Big Knob, and then on to other more expensive monitor controllers. TC Electronic released a purpose-built DAC/Monitor controller, the BMC-2, if you want to stick with TC.

Yeah, I noticed that too - if I limit the output of Logic to -0.3dB it stops the 896 going into the red. I don't suppose there's a way to adjust the calibration of the meters? I saw someone do that to a Soundscape interface but doesn't look like an obvious way to do it here.

As for the monitor controls - thanks but I think they look a bit overkill for my needs, plus a little pricey! I like the look of the level pilot for its simplicity but will try to check a few out.
