6ft FireWire works, 10ft and 15ft do NOT

Post by davidkhuffman »

I'm hooking a MOTU UltraLite (original, not mk3) to my SIIG Firewire 800 card (TI chipset), and it works fine with my 6ft firewire cable, but not with either a 10ft or 15ft.

These seem well within spec.

Has anybody else had this problem?

That is interesting, I am having a bit of trouble getting my 828 mk3 to work with my PC, and I am using a 15' firewire cable. I never considered that the length of the cable would make a difference, I'll have to try the original 6' cable to see if that resolves the problem.

I will report back later tonight.

thanks..

wow, and I have a 20' cable (good quality) that never give me trouble. I'll add that to things to consider if anything ever happens.

It's a common issue.

There are a few possible explanations.
- The longer the cable, the more surface area there is to damage.
- The longer the cable the more resistance the electrical current meets.
- It may just be a coincidence and the actual problem happens to be either poor conductor materials in the cable, or connectors.
