linking two 8pre's together

Post by caryd »

So I bought another 8pre today. My Mac only gives me the choice to use "8pre #1" OR "8pre #2". How do I chain the two units together so the Mac sees them as one expanded unit? (My Mac is an iMac5,1 and I'm running Leopard). I ran a secondary firewire cable from one 8pre into the other, and I also tried plugging both firewire cables directly into the Mac, no change. Should I try the optical ins and outs instead? Please help this Newbie out! Thanks, all.

A) If using (2) Firewire Cables, You have to create an Aggregate device.

B) Use the Opticals. Iam pretty sure this is possible with 2 8 pres

I have an 828MK3 and an 8Pre. I connect the 2 via optical. It works great

Thanks for the advice! I was pretty sure the opticals would do the trick - but I needed someone else to also think that, too - ha! It works great, but here's a mystery (to me) I have channels 1 thru 8 available, and 11 thru 18 - more than enough. But what happened to channels 9 &10? :D Thanks again!

In my set up, Ch 9 & 10 are the main outs. I changed mine in the Motu Audio/Midid Preferences. Go to your MOTU Audio/MIDI settings ....

Check out this thread for more info. It has to do with the 828MK3, but the same could apply to you as well.

I have two 8 pres, use a "lightpipe/ADAT cable" out from your #1 to an in on your #2. It will show as one unit with "16"inputs. I have used it this way for a couple of years, no problems what so ever.
Just remember inputs "9 and 10" are a stereo mix of the first 8 inputs.
Your xlr inputs will be 1-8 then 11-18.
Use the outputs and or headphone out on 8 Pre #1 as it has all 16 inputs going to it.
Non-Violence never solved anything.
