Ultralite installation problem

Post by Finland Blue »

I'm having a problem installing my Ultralite Mk3, if anyone can help me with this?

I am using 1.60 GHz laptop PC with Windows XP, 1.87 GB RAM. I connect the Ultralite to the laptop with a 6-pin to 4-pin firewire cable.

I have installed the Ultralite up-to-date software/drivers as per manual but cannot get it to work. The drivers appeared to load and PC said device was installed correctly and ready to use. I saw the MOTU choices in the dropdown list of the Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices, sound playback. I chose Main Outs. I then opened Windows Media Player to playback a WAV file and then got error message and could not play the file. Turning off the Ultralite allowed me to use Windows Media Player using the soundcard of my laptop but the MOTU did not show up in the Sounds & Audio Devices list any more. Double-clicking the MOTU Audio Console icon I got a message saying no MOTU equipment was connected (although it still was).

I have no idea how to troubleshoot this problem - if anyone out there could give me some advice I would really appreciate ...

Okay here we go.

Firstly I had an Asus F3sv that had a built in Ricoh firewire chipset (Open your device manager and look to see what firewire chipset you have) and with that I couldn't get the sound card to do anything at all, I sold that laptop and bought a new one a Toshiba satellite P300 with sony i.Link firewire.

If you have a Ricoh all in one chipset it could be possible to solve your problem with a firewire express card preferably with a TI chipset (such as: http://www.streetwise.com.au/product_in ... a1c1fd4e3a) although i don't know if that will work or not and as ADK audio says in the forum discussion here: http://recording.org/ftopicp-337081.html :- "adding a TI Xpress card will not solve the issue. it only helps slightly."

With the original OEM installation on my new PC I was getting alot of dropouts and to get the ultralite working properly to a point where I am confident that it is stable enough for me to be happy with it in a live setting I installed a fresh Windows XP SP3 Retail, not the OEM that comes with my laptop as that installs all the drivers for everything on the laptop which I did not want.

I then ONLY installed my motherboard, graphics and motu drivers to avoid any conflicts that could be occuring. No other sound drivers beside the MOTU ones were installed!
To check for conflicts open your device manager then right click device manager->view->'Resources by connection' expand 'Interrupt Request (IRQ)' to view your processors assigned IRQ channels. Check to see what else is running on the same IRQ number as your firewire card and try not to install the drivers for things in that list you don't need. An IRQ is like a pipe that information travels along to get to the processor (correct me if i'm wrong)

In my case I think the dropouts were due to my WiFi being on the same IRQ as my firewire and possibly also the dodgy firewire cable I bought from dick smiths in which case my DAW now doesn't have the drivers for my WiFi card installed and I bought a Belkin firewire cable.

Also check out this great guide for setting up XP for audio use: http://tarekith.com/assets/XPTweaks.htm

Good luck,
Chappo

Also Windows Media player sucks for running things through the soundcard, avoid using it.
You'd be better off running a DAW (ableton, reason, cubase) and setting the audio output to the soundcards ASIO driver which is much better then the waves (?) drivers that windows is using.

Thanks Chappo for the reply.

I'll check out the chipset (not by my laptop right now).

Checking your other link sounds like running a working laptop together with my DAW is not really a good idea (!) - possibly getting a new stand alone PC just for music is probably a sensible option.

Do you know any special things to look out for in buying a deskktop PC - chipset things etc?

Try and get a motherboard with a TI firewire on it, it's probably the best option you get for low latency music production.

example: http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Mot ... A78GM-US2H

under specification it says:
"IEEE 1394: T.I. TSB43AB23 chip"

that's what you want 'IEEE 1394' is firewire and T.I. is texas instruments, so just check the specifications of what ever motherboard your going to get and find out what the IEEE 1394 chip is. Texas instruments are supposed to be the best for firewire running audio.
