phantom power noise

Post by glsimonsen »

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot static-type noise I get when I use phantom power? I have no problems using a dynamic mic with my set-up. I also use an AKG C1000S condenser which I have no problem with as long as I use it's 9 volt battery. When I remove the battery and try to power it with phantom power it still records audio, but with a fair amount of background noise. I've also tryed an AT 4033 with phantom power with the same result. I've tried different cables. I have an Echo Gina 3G interface which works in all regards except this phantom power issue. Would this definitely be an issue with the Echo Gina or is there something else to look at?

Thanks, glenn

Sound like the gina 3G in not providing enough power to the mics.

Can you try another source of phantom power to see if that fixes the problem.
Creativity, some digital stuff and analogue things that go boom. crackle, bits of wood with strings on them that go twang

Also try a different cable just to eliminate that as a possible cause of the problem. But if you swap mics, swap cables, and you still hear the same problem, then there's probably a problem with the interface/mic pre-amp you're using. If you've got a different mic pre-amp, try that.
The leading cause of wrong answers is asking the wrong questions.

Yeah, this really sound like a phantom power issue. Some microphones are more sensitive , but if not the cable than in this case it´s probably (for 98%sure) the power source.

two different mics & two different cables => Power source IMMO
(just make sure the cables are balanced, properly wired and isolated)
Good luck
