896 MK3 Intermittent feedback

Post by mn0001 »

This is something I have noticed since I had this device. Running Sonar 8.3.1 in 64bit mode, ASIO drivers (latest version 1400 of WaveRT), and 1.01 of firmware and 1.01 of software on MOTU unit. My system is a Dell quadcore with 8GB of RAM running System 7 64bit and no System 7 doesn't have anything to do with it because my system was experiencing these same symptoms with XP and Vista, hence my desire to try System 7.

What will happen is during recording and sometimes playback I will experience a slight pause and a high-pitched tone that lasts for about 1-3 seconds and then playback and/or recording will continue as if nothing happened.

Its a different symptom than a pop or click or dropout, but I imagine is related to buffer size or some driver setting.

I just wanted to post this to see if anyone had any ideas on what setting to fix.

Thank in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Win 7 is uncharted territory for this fix, but it has been pretty helpful for XP users.

Thanks for the prompt reply! I checked out your link and it looks encouraging, I will check it out and let you know how I make out.

I am somewhat relieved to hear this high-pitch issue is familiar among existing MOTU users, and at the same time, am somewhat troubled that such an expensive piece of gear can cause such excess troubleshooting overhead. I completely understand about system tweaks and the need to constantly monitor for performance improvements on DAWs wherever possible, but I would expect this functionality from a $29 sound card not a $1000 one.

I think I am going to start with part 2 first and see how the registry hack goes, will keep you posted. I also had to set my firewire card back to Legacy per another helpful post on this forum to get Win7 to even recognize the 896mk3. I am reluctant to change the firewire drivers, but the speed could be an issue.
