Firewire 6 or 4 pin - Ultralite
Just got my UltraLite mk3, and it came with a 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable. I have a 4-pin socket on my laptop. Can I still use the interface if I change the cable to a 6pin to 4-pin? Or do I need to get some kind of adapter?
Re: Firewire 6 or 4 pin - Ultralite
The 6 pin is for the bus power. Not sure what the adaptor would do, unless it would work with the wall wart power that way. But the Ulrtalite is weird about which power source it uses as the book also states. I'm having trouble with mine and if I get thru to MOTU I'll ask that for you and post back later.
Ok, just got thru to MOTU and solved your problem but not mine.
You can use an adaptor ( 800- 400 FW ) but that won't power the Ultralite so you'll have to use the ext power ( wall wart ) for that. But he said then you should be good to go.
good luck,
Tom

Re: Firewire 6 or 4 pin - Ultralite
Thanks Tom.
If I understood right, the Ultralite will work with a 6-pin (from Ultralite) to 4-pin (PC), but will still need plugging in to get power?
Hope you sort out your probelm ...

Yes, that is right. Motu said that will work for you.
And......
I dragged my G5 and interface to the Apple Store here today and we did more testing that I couldn't do at home. We tried many things and the Genius there was an audio guy. They had another G5 like mine there, luckily, and the Ultralite turned off on that machine too. So, it goes off to MOTU for repair. Pretty sure that the interface is bad.

Agh, sorry to hear that. I hope its fixed soon!
I got the cable and it seemed to work, but I had other installation problems ... that's another story which I posted seperately.
Hope we can both be up and running soon ...
