Newbie Tempo Adjustment Question (DP6)

Post by Sonormuseum »

I have one tune from a set we recorded last NYE. It's all audio tracks, no MIDI. Unfortunately, the drummer (me) started the tune off too fast and the tempo crept up from there. Otherwise everyone played and sang all the right notes and I'd like to salvage it if at all possible. Is there a way to straighten this out in DP?

Thanks,

Clarification -- What I mean is: Is there a way to even out the tempo over the length of the tune on all the tracks at once (since we were obviously playing live and rushing from the middle of the tune to the end) and after that if it is possible to slow the whole thing down by 5 BPM or so. I don't have the luxury of bringing everybody back in to recut it.

It's possible, but I don't think you'll like what it does to the sonic quality - probably not even worth the effort. Drum tracks you can sometimes split up and re-align, but the other tracks will have to undergo some time stretching. Yuk!

If the stretching is minimal, then the artifacts may also be minimal. All you can do is try it and see what happens.

As an alternative:

A friend of mine had these same issues recently. If you REALLY need to fix it, and have the time to do it, but knowing you might end up wasting your time if it doesn't work, and if you have something like Stylus:

He imported everything to Recycle. He sliced everything for every track, then imported it into Stylus. Once he had all the "MIDI" notes in place shooting the audio slices, he messed with the tempo. To my surprise, it actually improved the song quite a bit. But he invested I don't know how many hours into this, and his tempo issues were not particularly ridiculous to begin with.

Maybe you could try some kind of combination of that, with manually messing with the SBs. I don't know... it sounds like too much work with iffy results to me :?

Gotcha. Probably not worth the effort, but learning how TO do it may come in handy sometime.

I personally had great results lowering the tempo of an entire track by 5 or even up to 10 BPM using Melodyne (the full Studio package with unlimited tracks). However "evening" out the tempo over the course of an entire song is not easy and is very tricky, but possible on Melodyne. On the same track that I slowed down about 5 BPM, I slowed down one 4 bar section or so another few BPM, but it's not completely unnoticeable. The quality is fine; you can however notice that those few bars are slower. This was done to the track (piano, bass and drums) before any overdubs, and it's not as noticeable in the final product. Doing this over the course of a whole song is not something I would want to tackle however.
