troubles with recording 26ch on 828mk3

Post by jodldajs »

hello

I have 828mk3, witch support 26ch of analog/digital input, I also have 2 of 8pre i would like to use for expand inputs because I need about 24ch for my work!
But I have problem with synchronization, when I turn bouth adat input (16 ch) I get terrible clicks and pops, so it works fine yust with 8 adat input!

Do you have similar problem or do someone know what to do ! it should be working vith all 16 ch of adat ! How can I sync this devices?

thank you

Have you configured the 8Pres to use ADAT synch? What is your clock setting for your 828?

I assume you are runnign 44.1 or 48 kHz?

I assume you are using good quality adat lightpipe cables?

Oh, and this should be working!

so you mean, before I plug in 8res, I run it first as interface and sync to adat? and then when I plug it to 828 I have now internal sync !

yes I would like to run on 44.1 kHz and I have god cables

I don't think I'm saying what you are saying.

Basically, the 8Pre can synchronize either to ADAT or Internal [and maybe more, like SPDIF?]. Anyway, I'm making an educated guess that you have to tell it which source to get it's clock from, otherwise, it will pop/click.

So take a look at the manual and see if it has any way to configure the clock source. For example, for my 828mk3, the driver has a drop down menu that allows you to choose which source to tell it to use for synchronization.

if you look at the picture I attached you can see that for me, I've chosen "Word Clock In" for my clock source, since that is what I'm using to keep all my A/Ds and D/As synchronized.

yes if I have w/c on 8pre than I would sync al devices to w/C, but 8pre dont have it

and in windows I dont have this options as you on mac - I can set only to adat in, toslink or disable on each bank of digital input

Maybe there is an internal jumper? Rear panel switch? I'm wondering, how does it know which clock to use?

no there isnt any jumper, the 8pre provides its own clock and send it to main sound card 828mk3 witch have DDS - system (digital direct synthesis) an DSP device witch detect input clock and sync to it automaticaly
so 828mk3 should be working and be able to lock on at least two clock at the same time (for adat 1 and 2 inputs, becaus they toult that this system is fully integrated to 828mk3)

the funny thing is, that 828mk3 detect bouth converters (8pre) sync it, I get signal through, I can managed it, rooting is o.k. everything, but problem is only faze interuption because vhen are bouth devices ON I get from one adat bank cliks and pops !

mybe is defect on 828mk3 board or something simmilar - I have just wright to motu support and waiting for answer

Ah, now we may be getting somewhere. I think, we have at least identified your problem.

You are describing a system where the "...828mk3 should be working and be able to lock on at least two clock at the same time..."

If we think about this, we have two masters [8pre] and one slave. Which clock should the 828 synchronize on? This is like playing two different songs through each of your stereo speakers, each with a different beat. Which beat should you dance to? Can you even stick to one beat with the other slightly out of time?

I'm not sure that metaphor worked, however, in order to have all your clocks synchronized, you can only have one master, the others must be slaved.

I guess what I'm saying is, it is no surprise that you are having trouble, you have two masters, and the slave doesn't know which to answer to.

So, I go back to expecting there to be a way to set the 8Pres as slaves, with the 828 as the master .

So try plugging in each 8Pre via firewire, all by itself, and see what the driver [similar to the picture I posted before] says. If it has an option to do so, set "clock source" to "ADAT Optical" -- if it will do this, your problems will be over. Do this with both 8Pres, and then set the 828 to "internal." If that works, everything will then work perfect because all clocks will be slaved to the 828 clock, so all your A/Ds and D/As will always be operating in lock step--no more pops.

hello

yes is seams logical, I will try this way, I have expected that this settings can be managed automaticaly since they advertise that is total compatible !

thank you

hello to every one,

THE PROBLEM IS RESOLVED !
I am so happy that you help me, because you have wright ! This option as you say is not in the manuale !

I reinstal again 8pre alone, and I check adat as clock and option optical in 1x (8ch to from one adat output), and same for second 8pre, and at the end an 828mk3 and set al adat in/out enabled and set clock to internal - problem was because I didnt have link bouth adat in and out, so mk3 was not been able to send master clock!

THANK YOU FOR HELLP !
