vari-speed in DP
Is there a way to vari-speed a track in DP?
In ProTools (sorry) TDM systems you can go to a window and enter a percentage value of normal speed, and presto! (or largo!) You can even move the slider while playback is active, and instantly hear the speed (and pitch) changing.
Even on my old analog 2" tape machine, there was this big knob that you could turn, with the same effect.
I realize there are issues, but it would be way cool, and carry the 'tape recording metaphor' further.
Possible Uses of this Feature: quick experimenting with alternate tempos on audio projects, without spectral computation; pitching the track down so that you could reach a high note; squeezing in more words in tight passages.
Sure, there are ways to do it in DP through DSP, but a big fat virtual knob would make things simpler, more immediate and offer more power to the user.

Re: vari-speed in DP
in a word, no. There is no easy way to do this directly in DP. you can approximate it with the time stretch/pitch change features but you have to do them both exactly and it degrades sound quality. One way you can do this in dp is to automate the delay time of a delay plugin with a linear curve. very fiddly way to do it though and only works extremely with very short samples.

Re: vari-speed in DP
No Speedster does not work that way
it works like an old tape based pitch shifter.
This is a real oversight on the part of MOTU. There should at least be a destructive way to do it:
I want to speed a track up so that I can cut the vocals at the higfher speed so they sound slowed down in the final product. This is such a stock and un-creative thing to do it shouldn't be impossible!!
likewise changing the pitch of like a cymbal crash without having to go to an external editor really should be possible in a program as deep as DP!

Re: vari-speed in DP
DPs Spectral Effects might give the effect you want.
If you try other pitch and time edits, You may need to change the soundbite to Standard Pitch Shift instead of Pure DSP (which trys to compensate for the Chipmunk affect).
You can also use a function generator that puts out square wave (TTL) at 5 volts. DP will follow up to about 50k, which is about a whole step above 44, and a half step above 48.

Re: vari-speed in DP
you can do this in software "Deck". It has a slider in transport menu, which you can move in realtime.
Re: vari-speed in DP
I have done that by slaving DP to a Adat(with Adat sync) and changing the pitch in the Adat.It was an accident but it works, if you don't ask too much...or the computer will go mad.
I think it's the same with a smpte sync with a analogue tape, because the speed of the tape is not so regular,so the computer has to follow.

Re: vari-speed in DP
Just load sound into a sampler (MACH5 anyone?!)
and play any speed you want from the keyboard
Easy.

Re: vari-speed in DP
I agree with Quaver, that such a function should be part of DP's 'complete' feature set. For the same types of applications Quaver mentions.
I will look into Speedster, thanks! And also into disabling PureDSP for these special ops.
By the time I've put the tracks into a sampler, and monkeyed with a Pitch Bend Controller on and off, and chasing, and then flown it back well, anyway, that's not how I like to work.
Hopefully MOTU will see this thread and step up its secret work on The Big Knob (vari-speed function.)

Didn't mean to denigrate Mach5, demonsp. . . I just don't have it.
Thanks, Tim for the link to the frequency generator. Now. . . where to input that into my Mac?
And toms vitins, are you Lydia's associate?

Molto Grazzi, Frank (in Italy)
WOW! Thanks. Speedster does just what i was looking for, as far as finding a quick tempo change value, or even a different key.

Re: vari-speed in DP
I downloaded the speedster and I am using dp4.52
Where should the component be placed?
I put it in the components folder under plugins, but it is not showing up on the plugin list.
TIA
