Quick ? recording Drummer with click track.

Post by lrios »

Hey all,

I've been a lurker here for quite some time. Love the forum. Enormous amount of information.

I have a problem that I haven't been able to solve easily and was hoping one of the great minds here would be able to lend a hand.

I'm recording a drummer that's requested 4-8 bars of click then muted for the rest of the track while the click continues to be recorded on a seperate track. He's looking to find variances with his tempo and hopes this will help. I can record the click but muting the click after 8 bars is still an issue.

I've tried multitudes of click settings, etc and haven't found a simple solution. I'm I missing something?

You could always send the click output to a bus, set an aux channel with that bus input, and then automate a mute on that channel after 4 or 8 measures.

How about using Model 12 as a click. For a simple click just use a closed high hat sound. Programing it through Drum Editor is a breeze.

Record the click to a track by bussing it there. Record as much of the click as you want.

Go to the Sequence editor and cut from hit 9 to whatever. If he wants it reintroduced at some point simply leave the rest of click present at some point of the recorded click.

You can also automate the recorded click to mute (as I think had been suggested).

I'm wondering if you are thinking of recording a click externally? If that's the concern - just use DP's internal click.

I would recommend the method that Terrence Palmer suggested. Output click to an aux, then automate the mute on the aux track. You can set up elaborate clicks in the Clicks preference pane.(Preferences/Clicks) You might just give it a try before resorting to recording click tracks. If you need the click to continue for others in the session, then use TWO aux tracks. Output click to the first aux. Send a bus from the first aux to the 2nd one, and automate the mute in the 2nd aux. The first aux continues for everyone else.

Ha! I'd probably just listen to the playback with a metronome - how low tech. Does Mälzel still have the patent for that? I've been sending him checks for years.

I'm not so egocentric! :) Someone in an adjacent picture signed my yearbook and wrote over my pict. Come to think of it, I did sign my own yearbook. Now I wish I hadn't. Full page of me playing the banjo. I'll have to snag a clean copy from a friend - I think I still have a few friends from my graduating class...
