Slimline PC's and PCI-324/424

Post by coordinatezero »

I have a MOTU 2408 Mk I. I recently upgraded my PC to a slick speedy new machine, but didnt think about the height of the PCI interface card. Needless to say, it doesn't fit in the new chassis.

Is there another card I can buy that will fit the low-profile chassis I have now? Can I use a generic FireWire card instead?

Thanks!

Sorry, you're out of luck here. The PCI card that has those firewire-like connectors do not pass the firewire protocol, therefore a firewire card plugged into the 2408 could actually damage it. Since you have the original 2408, you really should consider upgrading to the something like the ULTRALITE or the new 828mk3 coming out. Sonically, there is NO comparison as you're getting not only balanced I/O now, but much better converters. They connect via firewire, so you'd need a firewire card in the computer.

BUT BEFORE YOU GO THERE I HAVE TO ASK.... what computer is this that you're using? If the PCI324 card won't fit, I can't imagine anything else that would fit either. Is this an eMachines or an HP Computer---such as an office workstation type of machine?
Thank you,

I got a "Vostro" from Dell. I should have gotten the tower version instead...

Can you return it? What did you pay? Can you provide a link to what computer it is?

The Magma External PCI extender would be a potential solution. It can be supplied with a low profile PCI card that would plug into your low profile PC and then allow a full height card to plug into the external box.

The Magma extenders are rebadged and sold by Digi for their HD cards and I know of a number of people who have used these devices to add multiple PCI sound cards to PCs with limited PCI slots.

Here's a link to their single PCI card solution, although they also do multi-slot and PCIe versions.

The best solution would be to return your PC for something that accepts full height PCI. But, if you have no other alternative, this may work for you.

Digi only did their own chassis because what Magma had didn't have the thruput needed. With the new Magma chassis, that is no longer and issue and Digi stopped. To get an expansion chassis here would make no sense....either buy a new computer designed for audio, or buy a firewire audio interface.

Why does Magma solution have no sense? i'm having the same problem, i have a SFF PC and only accepts low profile PCI cards. I'm looking for an interface with at least 16 analog outputs. I thought the MOTU 24 I/O would help me but the PCI card would not fit. I didn't buy any interface yet, any advice to solve my problem? Thanks in advance
